Van Conversion

Hello

We picked up our Elddis CV40 just a week before lockdown and have used to for Click and Collect runs and one day trip to Southport, we can't wait to use it properly.

One item that does not seem to have a home is the handle you use to wind out and in the Dometic awning fitted. It currently sits on the floor infront of one of the rear bench seats but the handle just sticks out at the front and I keep stubbing my toe on it. The handle us too long to go in the locker under the bench seat and I can't see a natural home for it. I am loath to start drilling into my pride and joy to make fixings for the handle so am hoping someone on here can give me the inspiration I need to find a better Home for it.

Many thanks

Unfortunately lack of storage is a problem with van conversions which I recognised before I started my own conversion. The picture below shows how I overcome this problem by having vertical storage, not much help I know but you could consider making the handle a bit shorter. At sometime my handle broke so I just rebent it a bit to form a new handle, it may go under the seats then.

Our present motorhome has a couple of clips in the garage, accessible from inside, in case it is raining! Our previous vehicle had a couple of clips immediately inside the door, so the straightened handle just looked like a bit of pipe clipped to the door frame!

That’s assuming that the Dometic awning handle converts from cranked to straight like the Fiamma one, of course!!!

Unfortunately the Dometic handle has a permanent bend at the handle end, shame.

If you are tall enough shorten it and fix the mounting bracket/clips under one of the settee/bed locker. Luckily I can fit ours in the near side one as our V Line lockers are 6ft long, it can be retrieved through the hatch inside the rear door, in fact I removed the door as I keep 2 folding lounging seats, table pole and tri leg, level ramps, hook up cable and grip tracks all easily removed without having to go inside and lift seat.
I just put the handle back in on top of that lot when ready to go and refit it the next time I have to open or extend the base for the bed.

Mine is in clips on the side of the wardrobe, immediately behind, but to the side of the drivers seat.

We put a couple of stick on hooks by the front passenger seat belt on the b pillar and use velcro straps to hold the winding handle (and an umbrella) against that pillar. It can be reached through either the sliding door or the front passenger door.

I have a pvc and mine is wedged in above the cab seats but below the overcab storage. It gets pushed in against the side of the overhead cupboard on the offside and doesn’t move.

Our PVC has a locker across the rear, above the bed, so the outside face of the back of that locker is an ideal place for the clips for the handle and the tension rafter.

Mine's telescopic and fits inside vertically in two clips beside the main hab door.

Are you handy with tools? If so I have a solution

Our Fiamma one is telescopic & offset handle and is stored by the rear habitation door by two clips on the wall

Suggested places in addition to those suggested by others are:
  1. at the rear mounted horizontally above the doors on the piece of 'wall'
  2. stood vertically in one of the rear corners
  3. stood vertically in the washroom
If you don't want to drill holes for fixings you could try using some angle brackets which can be slipped behind the plastic facia for option 1. and 2. and for option 3 use some stick-on hooks which you can remove at a later date if required - the pole could then be attached with Velcro/straps

Why not replace it with an extendable one with a bendable handle, not the cheapest solution but should last forever.

If you are going to fit the clips buy some decent ss ones, the plastic ones supplied break very easily. I just throw mine on the garage floor.

Mine lays in the open storage space above the cab seats with duvet, pillows and other bedding stuffed in on top. No securing clips but the bedding stops anything rattling.

I think these handles are universal in length, I never need to use mine fully extended, if you don't need it to be long find someone to cut a piece out and weld it back up - assuming it will always stay with the van.

Although the price is outrageous ...these are the correct clips .

They look a lot stronger than the Thule ones.

I always find them too short, I have mine fully extended and if on a bit of a slope I have to stretch right up to reach. My wife doesn't stand a chance at 4'10".

I didn't know that you could get clips specific to the awning handle storage.
Perhaps that will be the way to go despite the higp price.

Our roller shutter garage door has a universal joint in the manual crank, which allows the winding handle to be used at an angle. If you cut your handle and put a universal joint in it, it would bend at up to 90 degrees. With two universal joints it would in effect bend in half

The Fiamma clips for the handle were included with mine.

Here you go...

You want a telescopic one ... I just happen to have a spare in my garage for a Fiamma awning but I suspect you have a Thule? I keep trying to sell the darn thing on Ebay saying collection only but of course numpties keep buying it and wanting it posting!

Elddis now fit Dometic awnings. The winder is much thicker than the Fiamma and therefore the Fiamma brackets are not suitable.
