To my surprise it's illegal to Wildcamp in Scotland although it is tolerated in some places, and you can camp with the Land Owner's permission. Reading about this subject is mind boggling

Isn’t it pretty much the same everywhere?

Provided that you restrict your activity to ‘parking’ then you need only find a legal parking spot.👍

There is a lot of noise made in Scotland about motorhomers who use of the term ‘wild camping’ when, in reality, they’re referring to off grid parking. Those making the noise will, rightly, point out that the right to wild camp in is limited to tents in remote locations and they’ll constantly refer to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code while ignoring what most motorhomers intend.🤷‍♂️

Ian

Permitted wild camping in Scotland is in a tent for 1 night. Not motorhomes but mostly not enforced

In the past on here I always got the impression that you could Wildcamp almost anywhere in Scotland.

That’s the problem when two groups of users use the same term for two different activities, particularly when the term is used in legislation.

When I was in my 20s, I camped in all the Great glens, but iwas in a very tiny tent, and made no mess,,,fast forward to today, we have a bloody great big ice cream van looking thing that’s anything but covert,so I can understand people s animosity and ruining their part of the world… just my view , before anyone wants to perform a public flogging of me 😂😂😂

I see everyone commenting on this are southerners.

Mmmmm, you lot stay in your own patch, and let us Highlanders worry about whether to stop somewhere for the night.
Maybe youre just lucky living in the most beautiful part of the planet,,for most , it’s a dream place,,always nice not to kill someone’s dream,,,ps, I’ve been to Cromarty, to the pub just opposite the old something or other building,( maybe courthouse?}

Hang on I had an uncle who spent three quarters of his life in England and so did his 2 brothers, but we were lucky he was buried in Scotland so he had the last laugh as the last money he had spent on him, was in Scotland 😂

Sitting in your well equipped moho, watching the TV and drinking cold beer from the fridge is NOT WILD CAMPING. It's FREE PARKING and there's an impolite term for it somewhere on this forum.
Bloody hell who gave you the Captains hat? Everybody is entitled to do what they what, that’s a very picky comment, and you can put your impolite term in your uncooled fridge,👍

Call it what you like :Eeek:

Every year for weeks at a time we go to Scotland touring.
We have yet to pay for campsite or even to park overnight.
There is loads of spaces to stay overnight with breaking any local or national laws.
But if you are at all concerned about 'Wild Camping ' in Scotland please don't bother.
You won't be missed.

Oh bugger.
After my one night stay on a camp site on Skye it was my intention to take a couple of days touring around nowhere special on the mainland hoping to find quiet spots to WILD, MH, FLT, whatever, but reading above i think i'll look for a B&B with parking for the MH.

I only put this post on here as I read the article in August MMM MAG. This was written by a former Police Commander, and former part time Law Lecturer , as friendly advice!! Apparently the info comes from
The Outdoor Access Code for Scotland, encourages wild camping for Pedestrians, and cyclists, it forbids vehicle based camping.

Hi I am originally from the North of England, I worked and lived in Scotland for many years, my daughter was born there. I now live in the Midlands, I have travelled the world and met many Scottish expats. Most of my time working in Scotland was in the Highlands. How dare you tell me to stay in my own patch when you guys spend your holidays in Blackpool.

I presume you intended to say “without breaking any local or national laws”?

If so, it would appear that you are unaware of the applicable laws or else you are well connected.

Ian

You can BUT not in a motorbike vehicle of any sort.
Walking cycling horseback canoeing is OK.

But, you may park overnight perfectly legally anywhere that a car can park (unless there are defined specific exceptions identified in the parking area).

The SOAC has no relevance to those who have no wish to avail themselves of the rights afforded by the Land Reform Act (Scotland).

Yep. It should read without.

I always stick to any rules when it states no overnight parking -- if it doesn't I can.

Love that,👍

I’m sure there are many Southerners ( me included) would love to live in Scotland, however we all live on the same island, and should be free to travel this island wherever you want to go,, and I’ll be buggered if I’ll let anyone tell me where and when I can go ( within the law) if everyone stuck to their home county, tourism would be seriously buggered,,

Blackpool is one place you'll never see me in.

We have stayed in a few places in England and Wales. Our 1 night in Harlech cost us £47 to park for the night and Seahouses was £45 to park between 3 static caravans. We stay quite often in Stratford upon Avon by the cricket pitch, £15 (I think).
We have travelled the whole of the Irish coast, and never had to stay on a campsite, but found lots of places that were free or small charge for parking. Then we have been to Europe 3 times, stayed mostly on Aires or Stelhplatz or campsites that cost no more than £18 or £20 per night.
Come up to the Highlands, there are lots of campsites, but we don't use them, there are many places you can park up for the night for £10 or £15 per night, but many more at no cost at all, call it what you will you just have to know where they are, they aren't hidden and most have glorious views. For instance try Stoer Lighthouse, no facilities put a donation in box or Mellon Udrigle, £15 (water, black/grey waste) beautiful beach. Achnahaird beach is free, just stay 1 night, no cost no problem.
These places are there, lots at no cost and no one will bother you

Wildcamping.

Me and my mates wildcamped as kids. 15 year olds on our push bikes. We rode from Manchester, tents on our backs. Asked permission from farmers to set up in fields or woods in Macclesfield forest. shot rabbit, skinned them and boiled over a fire.

I visited one of the farmers and his wife doing jobs for them for many years until she died last about 5 years ago. She always remembered us.

Can’t imagine my grandson next year doing that.
