Hi all,
I am tired of paying high charges to get on line when on a campsite or worse still find they have no Wifi at all. Has anybody got any sensible reasonable cost ideas.

Cheers Bertyboy

There are loads of threads about MiFi or just tethering your phone. Instead of paying for site WiFi, you use data across the mobile phone network.

Personally I've got a MiFi to give me internet to my laptop and tablet all over Europe.

As above.. Just get a good call/data package and if you need to connect other devises just set your phone as a hot spot and tether.. Done, sorted easy... NEXT please (y) :)

Hi Berty, it would help if you give us an idea of how often you use it, how much you need, which country etc otherwise we're all guessing at what would suit you best.

The one caveat of "just use your phone" idea is that the receiver/transmitter is not as strong as it could be compared to a standalone mobile router powered off the mains / 12v..
You can get a MUCH better signal from a dedicated mobile wifi router. and you can take even further steps to get a signal where your phone would have NONE when you pair the mobile wifi router with an external aerial or a directional external aerial if you know where the local mast is located.

Hi we use a Huawei 5577C MIFI on 3, we use it for TV Streaming and laptops, also you can add an External Ariel, you can have up to 10 devices connected at the same time.

We have started to use a motorhome wifi set up. The beauty of it is that we can connect it directly to any device requiring an ethernet connection AND we can connect more than one device at any time, so able to share the connection. Of course the campsite cost is a pain but being able to share it AND stream tv is a bonus

We have a terrestrial tv aerial that is obsolete. It has pole that you push up to raise and rotate the aerial. I'd like to keep the pole/elevate/rotate functionality but substitute a 4g aerial for the tv aerial. That way, I wouldn't have to make a new hole in the roof for the cable. The cable could come down the pole like the tv aerial lead does now.
Does this sound feasible?

absolutely doable yes
Directional aerials are better at grabbing a signal than an omnidirectional one, as long as you don't mind the faff of twiddling the pole.

HandyAndy-thanks. I wonder how easy it will be to remove the tv aerial and ensure that the directional 4g aerial is watertight?

I did this on our previous van, I actually fitted the wifi booster to the existing TV aerial casing so I could adjust the angle as well as direction. I cut off the RJ45 plug to enable the cable to go through a smaller hole in the pole, BUT BUT BUT I was warned it was essential to rewire it exavtly the ame way or it could damage the booster.

As long as you sikaflex where the cable from the antenna enters the pole mount and down into the van it should be as watertight as the old TV antenna I would have thought as it's the same pole / design. The 4g antenna "should" just clamp to the side of the existing / old pole with a serrated u bolt clamp

Hoff gaff are about to boost £15 8GB up to 15GB data. Unltd available for £25 but can't comment about Europe cover and they do throttle back after 25 GB.
No contract, but can choose 30fay auto renewal and change package size every month.

I use ID from Carphone warehouse @£10 a month. An unlocked data dongle from eBay and a cheap Chinese router. Works fine. As we only use it in the camper while away ,the data rolls over at the end of the month at the end of the summer cancel the contract.

Use these for my phone sim and it’s really good and flexible in the uk (piggy backs on O2 network). But they are really quick to cut you off if you’re in Europe; after 8 weeks in EU they cut off our roaming every time!
We use Vodafone data only sim for our mifi.

Just got a 3 sim 12 months unlimited Data £20 per month
If you go for a 24 month contract £10 for the first 6 months
Installed in Hawaii B525 router used 12gb on the first day

does a dongle work very well with ipad? not techno sort of people at all

There's two sorts of 4G (non-phone) devices for getting a remote internet connection. The first are USB dongles that plug into a laptop. This just gives you internet to that laptop.

The other type are MiFi hotspots. These are standalone gadgets that enable you to share the internet connection via a WiFi signal, the same as your internet connection at home. MiFi's will allow laptops, phones and tablets to connect simultaneously.

I would go for a cheap mifi unit first before trying any of the built in/motorhome specific etc stuff thats all we have you can easily spend a lot going over the top on stuff you don't need
