I know a few funsters have mentioned owning a static . I think Tombola you have one ?
Pros and cons from any owners please . We wouldn’t get rid of the motorhome, no way .
This would just be another place to visit but I don’t know if we would get full value because we own the motorhome as well . We are onsite at Lucksall and they have some very nice statics
Any thoughts from static owners ?

We had one for about twenty years and for three years after getting the first Moho. Found we rarely used it. Managed to trade it with the first Moho for the second. Even then the site wanted a cut. 😔

I think Minxy has a couple of Lodges she rents out . Hiring could be an option but this would more for us to use than a financial investment.
Just looked at the prices for Butlins . Eye watering .

Worst thing I ever bought, campsite has you buy the danglers right from day one, you have to have insurance through them, rental goes up every year, then when your van gets to be so old they make you take it off which you can't do as no other site will have it so you end up having to take what the campsite offer which will be pence.
Worst of all though you end up going to the same old place every time you have a holiday just because you have paid to have it and can't waste it.
No mate ,stick to your van.
Honestly it's like a nightmare everytime I think about it.

Checkout the ground rent for 8 month...10.5 month or ft season .
Mains gas or bottled..water meters ..your insurnace or theirs...etc etc.

I'd also say if you can rent one first checkout the potential "neighbours"
Does the site let the owners rent to any tom dick and Harry....gangs of lads.scally families etc. Or ideally not rent to anyone.

Ours only allows to let family members stay...(or close friends ) it's a small 50 van site with a nice club so easily controlled. 2500 per year rent

I love being able to just pop to ours it's a proper little home from home. I'm sat in it now with my sore leg up....and sometimes use it as a base when in my mh to head out for days out round Wales.

as Lenny says most sites have buy and sell on clauses...fair enough everyone has to make money but some take the p*** ours is 10% of the sell on fee and we don't have to sell to the site we can sell privately and he gets 10%.

but a van next door I almost bought had been offered 7k(trade price) by the owner for an easy 16k van (resale) but if you can't stand the heat ......

good luck (y)

Our friends have a nearly new two berth at Cayton Bay Scarborough. They pay around £5000 a year site fees

We have one in France, currently here for another three weeks. Very good value for money in France - on the site we're on it's €2400 per year. No age limit on vans, we sold our last one for £18500 having had it for nine years - it cost us £12500 to buy and ship it out, we prob spent £7k on it over the years (terrace, shed - with freezer washing machine etc)
We have now shipped out another one (7 years ago) for £16500, have prob spent around 7k on it again - others on site without the improvements we have are selling for around €20000 and I'm sure we could get close £21/22k after 7 years of us using it so lost maybe 3 or 4k at the most, though I am pretty confident we're around break even. We can sell privately without any 'site owner charges' (not even to change names on the owner details.
In the UK we would have prob lost £30k by now ....

Downside is that we can't use it every weekend but we do get around 12 weeks per year, which we think is well worth it!

Tombola - this is a photo of one of my legs on holiday - you may have started a trend ...

Good point on the age limit for vans on site..@misterb

As this is how a lot of sites make money by turning vans over at young ages and getting the cut

Do you head down in the mh or fly out

We use the car or motorhome at different times of the year. Wouldn't use the motorhome in the summer though. We have a 200sqm plot and we can squeeze the motorhome on it due to the orientation of the plot, sticks out a bit but it's never an issue as we're tucked away in a corner.
7 hours drive from Calais without rushing too much!

Thing is with your motorhome, you can still go to the site you are on when you want without buying a static there, plus you can go anywhere else you fancy.
Don't do it mate I beg you.

I agree, buying a static caravan in the UK for leisure use should come with a Government Wealth warning.

Site charges here for a week this time of year for a three bed van are over €900 - out annual fees are €2400 ....so it seems to make sense over here, especially with no age limit on the van, you just need to keep it and the plot in good condition/state of repair

France and Spain a completely different story than UK sites.

We have thought about having a place in either France, Spain, or Portugal but for us, but we felt that we would then feel committed to having to spend a certain amount of time at the place to get the use out of it when really we like to be on the move seeing different places every few days.

It’s a real dilemma for any motorhome owner. Clearly Tombola has had a good experience as has MisterB . On the other hand it sounds like chaser had his hands burnt. It’s only because we have a little more disposable income with the new job than we did before that I even contemplated the possible purchase . Plenty to think about here .

We have our old caravan on a seasonal pitch as a bolthole to visit and rest up from the grandkids. Works like a static in that it has proper crockery, glass etc where weight is no problem. Its a halfway house (??) to buying a static. When we are done with it in a few years we don't have to sell through a site owner, nor replace when its ten years old, no additional maintenance charges, and electric paid by meter (we have the solar on the roof of course so don't need much.)

We have one on a smallish family run site, no clubhouse just peace and quiet. The site is non rental apart from friends and family and no age limit on van. We bought knowing we would probably loose money but only went for a van priced at what we could afford to loose. We bought equidistant to our 2 daughters for childminding duties and we stayed in it for 8 months while moving house. Site fees just gone up this year to £3000. If we had sold just after covid and before Ukraine war we might have made a profit.

Thanks for all the input guys 👍🏻. This would be a big purchase for us so I would definitely take everyone’s advice onboard before any commitment 👍🏻

We looked at it very briefly but it was the buying/selling/ fees etc that put us off and the thought that if the site ever changed hands you had no security in terms of what they did. We had a static at the gliding club years ago that was a real bargain in terms of the ground rent everyone bought them from a secondhand static dealer that bought ones up cheap that were too old for the site they were on to be allowed to stay. It might be better to go for a posher bigger MH and seasonal pitches.

It works for us because our daughters also have one on the same site, so Easter and Summer are both big family holidays together (they are teachers) so they and their children get at least five weeks in the summer and two at Easter. So for at least 7 weeks of the year they are paying what works out to be an average of around £330 per week. The biggest part of the equation for them though was the low potential loss of equity and as they both picked up vans for under €6k even that is limited. You could easily lose that in a couple of years in the UK.
If I was considering doing it in the UK, then a big old tourer on a seasonal pitch would top of my list to consider.

As mentioned I’d go for a large caravan as you can put it on seasonal pitches and if you didn’t like the site any more or fancy a move just hitch up and put it somewhere else, seasonal pitches are quite reasonable or even some sites have storage (even cheaper) then just get it pulled out on to the pitch when you are there, saving more money…

Out of 100 owners of statics there’s an awful lot of complaints….😎

Hi.
What i was going to post..You have paid for it. The choice of. A. Going in a different direction...B. Going to the Static. Becomes a chore. We had a static at Skeggy, the one with the water ski gismo ( Waterside ? ) 16 odd years ago. GREAT pubs and meals nearby and in Skeggy, cheaper than buying the stuff and cooking it .As said,it got very " In a Rut " type of relaxing,whereas,m/ho...Shall we pull in here for the night or lets have a look see at there. Wake up every morning to a new vista. ( Like Tramping in the lorry.)
A Minor plus being in a m/ho.... Sometimes, someone parked... nearby will say HELLO BACK.... :ROFLMAO: Don't hold your breath :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:
:ROFLMAO: ( Its my " Minority " complex..Would it help if i showered and shaved once a month ? ) Just askin' like you do.
Tea Bag. 🚛
