Hello all,

we are looking to get a windout awning installed on our hymer coachbuilt. I wanted to ask for peoples opinions :

1/ Which manufacturer would you recomend ?

2/ If you had installed then by whom ?

3/ What length and depth did you go for ? Did you go for the max length that would fit ?

Look forward to hearing your experiences.

Paul and Helen.

1 had an omistore now a fiamma both ok
2 Rhino installs at Preston great guy
3 Don't know without measuring it, it's the length of the body of the van.

Thule is probably the best, Dometic is a slightly cheaper version although Thule is part of Dometic the Thule one is better and both a bit better than the Fiamma.

When we were looking for our first van a strong selling point was its fitted with an awning.
A lot of the awnings seemed too short or fitted in the wrong place. With the awning wound out it left the habitation door beyond the end of the awning.

We had a Fiamma F45ti and had to replace, wind damage and we replaced it with a Fiamma F45s and the quality is very poor compared with the old design.

Do you need an awning in the first place do you use a lot of campsites if not what do you need one for can’t use them on aires in France you have to watch out for wind increasing, have you got enough payload ?

Thule seem more robust than fiamma, also have a neat part that forms a triangle to keep awning out much like a centre rafter but easier to use and the light bar is better designed and better looking I think!

I wouldn’t buy one now, the only reason we have one is that it was already fitted. Use it extensively on sites in June, July and August, usually too windy otherwise.

IMHO, not worth the cost and payload if it wasn’t already fitted.

A camping car is not a camping car without an awning(y)

Go as long as you can, we've had Omnistor (now Thule) and also Fiamma and both have been very good although i do think the Omnistor was better made and had more metal parts, Fiamma parts are easy to get though and are usually quite cheap.

Shouldn't need parts for a well-built piece of kit.

Couldn’t do without ours in Europe but Not on Aires of course. Have some storm straps but anything about 20 mph wind I wind ours in. Not only does it give you some shade but it helps the van keep cooler. Also have a front sun shade which is very useful and just slides into the rail.
Had a Fiamma which was good and now an Omistor which seems fine.

Used mind plenty on aires in France, as do the french and anybody else if it’s hot/sunny enough to require it. Just depends where and how you park.

Have a look at GH awnings I am told they are far far superior to the 3 brands mentioned here, although I have no experience of one.

We use ours on Aires in France when we can. Never been a problem.
I can’t see the point in not having an awning on a van.
