enough to know i shouldnt touch things i know nothing about ....
We're currently having to use paying aires until our new battery arrives next weekend. No great hardships as we've been able to sample some good and some not so good pay as you go aires. They have all been credit card so pretty simple. There are others we woukd have stayed at which just require tokens but we havent tried any yet. Does anyone carry tokens as a matter of course for emergencies? Can you get more than one type of token from Tourist/Mayors office/shops etc or do they just tend to have them just for whatever are installed locally. Thanks.

We don't carry them, and our experience is that you can only buy for the local bourne. It seems to me that if you buy a token in one place and use it in another, the wrong community is getting your money.

Been going to France for about 25 years staying on Aires ( not motorways)

Each time we on a Aire I always go to the mayors office and get a Jeton or as you say Tokens.
When you have 5 different ones, that should be enough and then just
replace as and when, they only cost a Euro.

Have always found free electricity on aires wouldn’t pay for it as they are mostly for a short time up to an hour

On some yes. Others no.

We carry a few that we haven’t used. There are different types and different prices. I’m sure if you know which ones you require for regular places you could save money by buying at different places.

Never had to use a jeton/token except for a washing machine. Most french aires we have been on that required a payment take euros or cards, most were free. I wouldn't worry about finding tokens etc.

It must depend on areas. We only found one or two that were card payment, and about 6 that were token recently. Some had machine that one token had to be used for waste dump.

Other trips never needed tokens.

Don't you need a token for water, grey dump, black dump as well as power?
Phil

Grey dump is always free - just a grid. black dump is often free(except those enclosed boxes) so tha just leaves water, so happy to pay for that to fill the tank, but cannot be bothered to walk to the Mairie or Tabac just to rinse cassette so we use our grey water to rinse it. Never need electricity.

I think they are slowly moving over to credit card payments. There seem to be a different jeton for every area.
We carried one for two years before coming across another one to use it in. There are many free services.

I suspect, but don’t know conclusively, that jettons vary from machine to machine.
I suspect the slots are cut differently so that a Jetton purchased in one aire won’t work in the same machine/borne in another town.

Richard.

We have a tub full, ;) sometimes we actually have one that fits the machine.  Bob.

I have read threads that have stated that some machines in France will only accept cards from French banks.

Also in France I have my Polish Debit Card refused at a filling station. Frustrating when cash desk is closed.

Are things changing fast in France now as we have been going 2 or 3 times a year for the last 8 years and never had a token for anything or in fact very few times paid in any way for water and never to empty

Think it depends on areas. More touristy areas I find are free or card, but less used, northern France aires are token. That’s my opinion.

Jetons are pretty useless when the water is turned off. Just got home last night from our lastest trip when travelling through France out of 9 Aires we stayed on only 2 had the water turned on.
