I need to put a solar panel on my doblo, compressor fridge is a bit power hungry, and we want to use it for the odd festival and someone now wants to use it for silverstone. which type of panel is best suited for a non flat roof? will be putting in a battery master as well as the regulator as that works really well in the coachbuilt.
Would prefer sensible replies, but am used to the forum jokers .

Any panel will do, its the height of the mounts which are important.
Short mounts mean the panel may hit the roof at the peak of the roof curve. .
Long mounts will lift it clear.

Hi Sue,
We have a Hobby (as per the avatar and there isn't a flat panel on the whole van, (front, back, sides and roof)
As pet Pappa's post above, our solar panel straddles the roof centre. It doesn't touch but is higher either side.
Regards

As Pappajohn says the panel mounting support brakes should take out the curvature of the roof.
I buy cadmium plated steel brackets from My local builders Merchant @ 0.40p EA if the RV white plastic feet are unsuitable. Fit using Sikaflex and stainless steel self tapping screws.

thanks for that next question which type of panel and controller only bit i am sure about is the battery master as it works so well on the mizar.

The Doblo is a small van, so you are limited in roof space. Monocrystalline panels give you more wattage for the same area compared with polycrystalline or indeed any other types. A good fast-response MPPT controller will give you more power when the light is not bright sunlight, compared to a cheaper PWM. Victron smart MPPTs are good fast-response controllers. From what others have said before, I think you're going to need over 100 watts to keep a compressor fridge going - 200 watts would be better.

I am wondering if even a larger panel will give enough energy in the UK other than in summertime. Are your leisure batteries worthy of the task? The battery Master from Eddy was great in an earlier van that we had.

i know two people had flexi panels fail in 2 years ive not met anyone had a rigid panel fail

it is only to run the fridge, i have that and 3 LED lights and a socket for charging my phone. Fridge wont switch off ? so I take the fuse out. so far have only used Dobbie with hook up must try it without in the warmer weather as it has no heating.
We only have 160 on the Mizar and it is fine even for a couple of days in the winter, but not running a waeco fridge on that.
