We are no longer Newbie's.
Can anyone advise which engine oil I should be using to top up my sump? Engine is a Mercedes 2.7 CDi 5 cylinder, 160hp on a 2000 yr Hymer B680 with sprintshift auto. Manual is 17 years old and obviously oil technology has moved on since the recommended oil was listed in the book so I need to know what grade to buy just for a top up between services.

I used to buy it from the Merc commercial dealer local to me.

Bells trucks they were called and have branches all over I believe. They will sell you some of the correct stuff, even in small quantities if you take a container in with you.

We're using 10W-40 Semi-Synthetic diesel oil in a 2005 version of your motorhome, it's the nearest I can get in a modern oil. Also use propriety brands too, Shell, Total etc.

For the full auto box and rear axle using Mercedes oils as both are complicated to find a direct comparison as they keep updating the specs even for older vehicles

When I have my van serviced the motor factor's just type's in the reg for the correct oil no problem, I think all motor factor's now do this.

Wahey!! I've got a gallon of that in the garage from my old Astra but thought it might not be suitable for the Merc big engine.(y)

It's got to be of decent quality mind, the better (more expensive?) ones have all the additives.

In Halfords just look up their oil chart for Merc sprinter - simples! :)

i tend to use mobil 1 semi synthetic 10-40w seems to run best on this oil on my hymer 312d 2000, looking through the service history from germany this oil was also used before i imported it from germany. only used a fully synthetic once and suffered lots of smoke from exhausted.
