We are about to set off to Newhaven, and crossing to Dieppe tomorrow. I was mulling over the fact that over the years we have favoured various routes and carriers but recently seem to orientate back to DFDS on the above.
Our reasons are personal of course, first it's a good deal still (including the over-60's 20% discount), 2nd. The port is quite low key and being less popular seems more relaxed. 3rd, it's just a 4 hour sailing and you disembark a little further South. Then there's the fact that Dieppe isn't too bad, still retaining some bucolic charm and a nice little centre. For us the south coast ports are convenient although Newhaven is a good hour further to drive than Portsmouth, but at least it's closer than Dover.
So a list of reasons to favour this route. What's your current favourite?

Eurotunnel. Simple and quick. We stay in our motorhome. Very easy for us as we only take just over an hour to get to the terminal from home.

And the company were very generous with our frequent traveller tickets during Covid. Bought in the spring of 2019 and supposed to last one year. They have now extended them to the end of 2022

Couldn’t be any more complimentary of Eurotunnel… they even gave me a full credit (credit note) when I turned up one week late for a crossing. I had made the mistake booking the wrong date. Top notch that!

Channel tunnel 3 mins drive, P&O as hefty discount through a contact 14 mins drive,

Dieppe, unless we are heading straight east. Newhaven same distance from Nuneaton as Dover. No M25, Dartford crossing, M20. Ports both ends far more pleasant than Calais, Dover and 20% discount. Well placed for central France, Germany, Austria, Spain, Portugal or just west coast France.

Tunnel for ease and price but a 5 motorway drive and £100 in diesel but Poole to Cherbourg. mainly because if we are first vehicle on, which we often are due to our height, we are first off. Less than 1 mile to home and kettle on. Downside is only one crossing at 8.30 am currently .

When we lived in Gtr Manchester (for 30 years up to 6 yrs ago) we more often than not used Hull - sometimes to Rotterdam, sometimes Zeebrugge. We particularly liked that when returning home, we were back before lunch. Still relaxed from the holiday.
We have used south ports, particularly when we lived in the Midlands, and that long motorway journey home was just horrid!

Portsmouth (20 mins down the motorway) and any of Caen, Cherbourg or St Malo depending on where in France we're headed. Overnight (with cabin) on the way out - we just like the vibe on the night ferry - morning ferry back.

Always the tunnel because of the dogs, but without dogs Newhaven as its only 15mins away and saves a fair mileage in France if going South. Neither of us are remotely affected by the dreaded mal de mer and are old enough to get the discount.

Newcastle to Amsterdam or Hull to Zeebrugge although that’s stopped now it’s only Hull to Rotterdam which we’ll be on in just under 4 weeks.

Dunkirk- Dover, mainly because we are starting in Poland. Calais could be a few kms more driving but a shorter crossing. Fares are the same for Calais or Dunkirk.

However Dunkirk, with only one ferry every 2 hours, is easy and is/was free of immigrants as there are no queues so one drives straight to check-in.

I also enjoy the 2 1/4 crossing, just time for a coffee, our picnic lunch, saunter around deck and watch the mooring.

Tunnel if we are going east. Easy, short and cost effective due to Tesco. Normally catch the 0720 for ease of traffic on the way down.
If we are going west of Paris then Newhaven on the night crossing. Use the 20% discount for a cabin. Return on the 5pm after doing the market and hypermarket. Overnight at a Britstop close to Newhaven.

Euro tunnel, bought with Tesco vouchers.

In April we “treated ourselves “ to a Commodore Class cabin Plymouth/Santander. It was a special occasion but still the price was ridiculously high. We could have flown to Spain and had a weeks package holiday for the cost.

It was also incredibly rough due to a named storm. We were OK but many passengers were sea sick.

Tunnel again in September!

Harwich to Hook of Holland. Not very busy port and Harwich is only just over an hour away from home with no congested motorways, cabin is good and after breakfast only a few hours onto Frankfurt. Relaxing really. If going to France then always Newhaven Dieppe. Again a small port, easy loading and the promise of a nice stay on the aire in Dieppe and good meal at a portside restaurant before the ferry home the next day. And the over 60 discount!

Plymouth to Santander or Roscoff depending on where we are going. 40 minutes from home! For the evening crossing we could leave work, drive down, get fish and chips from the chip shop on west Hoe and eat them whist waiting to be loaded and get a good nights sleep!

In days gone by, our favourite was Hull-Zeebrugge, easy access/egress both sides.
Sorely missed😞
Yes, living in York, that was far and away our favourite port. As soon as you embarked, the holiday began. Great food in the Four Seasons restaurant. Even better at the end of the holiday not to have that awful trip up from the south. Now we are retired, it’s not too bad but we really do miss the Hull to Zeebrugge run. 😢
