The two York sites are full and I took them to Birmingham earlier in the year. We live on the Kent coast to Canterbury is our local main city so not there either. Other ideas please.

Oxford, the Caravan and Camping Club site (you don’t have to be a member). You mentioned York and Oxford would be a similar visit.

Can you nip over to Europe? Bruges/Ghent or the other way to Dublin/Galway?

Ooooo, good ideas. As to what they’re interested in (when they can be dragged away from their electronic devices) my son loves science stuff and my daughter loves history. They don’t like each other’s hobbies. So my daughter spent a very happy day looking around English Heritage’s Battle Abbey whilst my son moped and my son adore herstmonceux observatory whilst my daughter sulked. We’ve just had a weekend at Badgells Wood (only VWs or tents so we tented) where we all learnt bushcrafts, how to throw an axe and how to shoot an arrow.

I second Oxford , bus or walk into centre from c&cc site , lots of museums to satisfy both of them plus the colleges and river.

Edinburgh - Dynamic Earth, Zoo, Royal Yacht, Sealife, castle, Museum of Childhood, Holyrood, Dungeons, Ghost walks under the city …

I'll second Edinburgh, loads to do.

Do they like theme parks? know a lovely site near one and walking distance of Edam camp a WW2 museum within a former POW camp. Also easy distance of EH sites.

There are more than 2 sites in York most on a bus route

Which period/genre of history?

Greenwich Royal Observatory - science and history.

Portsmouth Naval Dockyard - Mary Rose and artefacts

Chatham Heritage Dockyard.

(Try your local recycling centre? ;))

I would love to go to Edinburgh, but that’s a big outing that would be good for Easter or even May half term.

They’ve been to Portsmouth and yes Chatham is relatively easy as is Greenwich, it was more a couple of days away in my beloved van.

Except that I left them to family members earlier this year whilst we went to Peru and the Galapagos, feel that we now need to make it up to them

Am liking this idea. I adore the Yorkshire coast and used to have family up there.

Aha, your '..my beloved van' rather exposes your real motivation ;)

Would it be risking the collapse of domestic harmony (if there is such a thing with teenagers) to ask them?

Walking distance bus stop too if you fancy a break from driving all the way to Whitby via the moors.
