We plan to finally drag ourselves away from Montgenèvre and travel south, but cannot decide where.

We thought we would try the Camargue area for some milder weather and hopefully get the bikes out. If the snow conditions in Montgenèvre improve we may come back, if not we will continue to Spain.

My question is - can anyone reccomened the Carmargue are for cycling or should we go else where?

After leaving Montgenèvre we had a couple of nights at the very lovely Sisteron. We camped at a free aire right beside the Citadel.

After the noise of the ski resort, what with the piste machines and snow canons going most of the night, this place was so quiet we had the best nights sleep for a long time

After walking around the town on the first day, we packed a picnic and had a lovely walk out into the countryside the second day, following one of the local walking routes.

The next day we headed to the Camargue National Park but ended up on the coast as we were being very indecisive about where to stop.

We chose an aire by a little harbour town, which might be nice if it wasn't being dug up and road works and diversions everywhere you looked. We followed a cycle route along the coast, but the ground was so rough, I think we loosened our teeth.

Your not too far away from Sommieres (CC 22306) and Uzes (CC2624). Uzes is good for Pont du Gard and Sommieres is just a delightful little town with lots of interesting history (including 2000 yr old Roman bridge still in every day use!). Also a good cyclepath out of Sommieres.

The aire in Uzes is a winemaker who sells good wine at fair prices (y)

Gordes (CC 2678) also very nice too:D

And St Saturnin Les Apt (CC22130) :D

The following day we decided we wanted to get to Spain and ride a Via Verda cycle route we knew of starting in Tortosa. We knew there is a nice enough free aire there. We arrived late afternoon, restocked the cupboards at thenearby Aldi.

We have walked part of this route before as we were forced to stay In Tortosa for a week when we broke down nearby, in 2015. It was good to explore further afield on the bikes, with a coffee stop at Xerta and It's pro Catalonia regalia

Thanks for the recommendations. Unfortunately we had already moved out of the area by the time you posted. We can follow up those another time.

We arrived at the coastal town of Oropesa del Mar, just up the coast from Benicasim. On the recommendation of @champers we have booked into Camping Ribamar for a week. And yes we were 'Champered' yesterday, over lunch and afternoon drinks, my poor head this morning! :worried:

Thanks for a great afternoon John and Kath, it was lovely. Now stop nursing the hangovers and get ya bikes out! :cycle:
