I said I had another silly question... so, whilst looking for the cause of my airbag problems I investigated the wires under the seats. Under the passenger seat is this Elektroblok unit, and with it, a loose wire..

How can I work out where this is supposed to go (or if it's supposed to be disconnected..). Nothing in the hab area seems wrong, it just seems odd due there to be a disconnected wire there..

Thank you..
Stu

Have a look under the drivers seat you may have similar  that you could use as a template

We inherited a whole loom with terminated connector blocks under the passenger seat.
The selling dealer posited it was for some fancy entertainment system that the original owner had kept.
Most of it's still there but I have raided it once or twice when needing a component for some electrical project;)

Good idea to post a picture of the Electrblock.

It may help if you tell us where version it is.

Even so, it is not unusual to have empty sockets on the EBL (and wires not going anywhere)

That wire looks like it may have pulled out of one of the connector blocks that plugs into the Elektroblock(EBL). It might be a good idea to put some insulation on it until you find where it belongs just in case it shorts out on something. Does the length of the cable give you a clue which block it might reach and is it bundled with other cables that go to a particular block?

Edit. Is there a plug going into the EBL which has an empty plastic hole where other holes have unused metal inserts.

I agree with Pausim that it looks like a pin that's pulled out of one of the connectors of the EBL. What model number is the EBL? Can you post photos of the connector plugs with the wires coming out? I know it looks like an overwhelming mess at first glance, but each of the wires has a function, that is documented in the manual.

In practical terms. the connector pin has a couple of small barbs that stick out slightly, and are there to lock the pin in place when it is pushed into the plastic connector shell. If the barbs are a bit pressed in, they don't hold the pin, and it can come out. Very rarely happens, but it's possible.

Got some better pictures..

The wire comes from the top 10A fuse from the block on the right..

The manual has this page in but lists the model as EBL 99 whereas what is actually there is EBL 119

The other brown wire in that fuse comes from the 3 core wire at the bottom with a grey and black wire coming from it. Trying to trace the grey wire, I found that it was just tucked into the other wires age not plugged in either.. so I'm thinking the thing to do is to tape over both..

It's hard to see the colour of the wire in the photo, is it brown? If it is, then brown is the standard German vehicle colour code for DC negative return. That might explain why it seems to have no function, because there may be other possible return paths via the chassis or other wiring.

Edit: just seen your better pictures, the unknown wire is definitely brown. You could easily check that there are 7 brown wires going into Block8, the 15-way connector on the right. It's hard to see them all in the photos.

The EBL119 manual is here:
