We have most of October free and are wondering about chasing a bit of early-autumn warmth. Does anyone have recommendations for areas in France - presumably the south - that are still warm at that time of year? Don’t mind using aires on the way down but would prefer somewhere to stay for a week or so once we’re there. Don’t particularly relish sitting in the motorhome in the dark evenings for a month, so places with the possibility of eating out and local travel are preferable.

Or are we better off heading into Spain? If so, recommendations are welcome.

Thanks in advance.

The Ardèche was lovely when I went in October but most campsites were closed.

We’re keen fans of Marseillan Plage and its thereabouts. There are some sites still open but a lot are closed. But plenty of aires. Swam every day up to 16 October when we left.
Camping Beauregard and Marseillan Plage are two that are open.

Ingwe thanks for the reply. Stayed at Agde on my very first trip to France as a teenager in 1976, would be interesting to see how it’s changed.

Last October we started in Marais Poitevin then headed down to the Med and Provence - all were sunny and warm. Almost went to Bordeaux but didn’t have time.

Last time I was in France back in 2014 everywhere was closed in the South of France in September. And most Aires closed driving back through France. Edited to say they were bloody sick to death of the English by the attitudes I came across in the few bars and restaurants that were open.

You’re welcome. I’ve still got some loons and tie-dye flared t-shirts you can borrow with my CND head band, man🙂

Hmm, we had that anti English thing too in Falaise on the way back to Ouistreham a few years ago. Proprietor of the bar was very offhand with us (even by French standards) until we ordered blue steaks, in French. We were outside on the terrace - turned out he had a restaurant full of the speak-loud-in-English brigade all demanding well done meat and 'proper' English food etc.

Long story short, by midnight there was just us, him, and the village drunk in the bar*. I was asking him what time he shut and his response was 'what time do you want to go'. The entente was restored.

*I suspect a passer-by would not have easily guessed who was who.

Oh .. and to answer the question, just go South.

Camargue is hard to beat in Autumn, easy reach to many nice towns as well (and the mozzies have reduced by then)

Last year many campsites shut but easy to search those that are open … all aires open. No negativity, some great chats but I guess if you can speak French it makes things easier?

Yes but every time I spoke French I was always asked please speak in English as I want to improve mine. I agreed one night with the French barman, I speak in French and he replies in English. Simples.

I've stayed at Cassis in October. Still very hot and sunny when I was there.

If you think that’s difficult, try attempting to practice speaking Dutch in Holland!

That is so true. I remember once speaking in French into an intercom at a French Ibis hotel asking if they had a room for the night and the guy replied in English, yes of course come in. We laughed when me met as I said to him is my French that bad and he said No, I just love your accent though :giggle:

Better than us then, we randomly called into an Aire and were surprised at his perplexed frown when we tried to book for that evening, it transpired we had been trying to book for the night before yesterday!! Lovely slightly olde world charm site on the Tarn, with a little weir for me to play on.

Being a real Smart Ar$e, could I suggest you could try;

They are all Departments of France.

(Clever S*ds those frenchies) No doubt all of the above can draw on EU funds.
Could add St Barts to that (Smart Ar$e) list... ;)

Not forgetting lovely Girona in the same area 👌
Girona is a charming city. There is an aire on Passatge Messaguer, which is the ground level of an underground car park! Water and dumps; also toilets/basins one level down. Pay by card. And amazingly quiet at night, considering you are in the middle of a city.
