Fire extinguishers that is........

Would like to have fire extinguisher near kitchen area as think this is most likely area we will need it......but everywhere we look at is either in the way of a drawer, cupboard or likely to get knocked as you walk past.

Have also considered on floor in cab area? or in rear garage?

So.........where have you put yours?

Auto-Sleepers put ours at the left side of the drivers seat. I think that’s as good a place as any.

Swift, at the side of the hab door opposite the kitchen.

Dethleffs at side of hab door opposite kitchen and also behind driver's seat.

Got two.. one on the wall behind the passenger seat and one beside the hab door

Don't put it at the kitchen as that is most likely where the fire would happen and your first reaction if a fire broke out would be to GTF out of there thus heading for the exit of the MH and then once you got past the panic stage and got the courage to fight the fire, the fire extinguisher would be right in front of you and not in the middle of the fire that you just left.

I put ours behind the driver's seat next to the 'B' pillar adjacent to the sliding door, it sits in a bicycle bottle holder so can be easily removed if needed, this location means it can be grabbed from outside as well as inside.

Then of course there is the fire blanket to hang also:eek:

Mines is at floor level by the sliding door attached to a kitchen cabinet. Easy to reach from inside or out and close to the hob.

Has anyone actually had to use one inside a van?

I keep mine jammed between the mattress and the wall, within reach as self defence

Hymer.
We put one just inside hab door, on floor, hinge side-can be reached from outside too!
Our second one is just behind the drivers seat also reachable from outside.
Both are easy to access from inside & out!

We keep one screwed to the wall by the habitation door and one in the drivers door pocket.

To get the best advice you need to tell us the make, model and year of your motorhome. There are so many different layouts which means there is never going to be a universal solution.

In our 2015 Hymer B678 we have a fire blanket on the shelf above the fridge and an extinguisher attached under the bench seat behind the passenger.

Yes ... we had a gas pipe fitting 'let go' and a 5ft blowtorch in a previous MH, once the gas was off the extinguisher was used to ensure there was nothing burning in the cupboard where the gas fitting was. Fortunately I'd put insulation at the back of the cupboard where there was a gap which had ensured it didn't get behind the kitchen unit but stuff got burnt, melted the side of the fridge door etc. Apart from the fire the powder from the extinguisher didn't half make a ruddy mess and we found it for months and months afterwards.

I've got one behind the drivers seat, one next to hab door and a fire blanket on the wall of the kitchen area.

Thanks for all your replies........near a door seems most common sense place so access from outside if needed......area around drivers seat area seems good to give access to engine or habitation area.......just need to make a decision now! Many thanks.

Where ever you site it ensure your escape route is behind you, fire extinguishers are there for you to use for your escape, then to maybe tackle a fire, if you don’t attack the fire at its source, the fire will spread fast, look at all the flammable inside you van and the amount of plastic. Not looking to teach people suck eggs as they say stay safe,

one in passenger foot well, one in hab doorway and a bigger one in garage, plus a blanket on the wall beside the hob

Screwed to cupboard wall on left of hab door, Auto Trail Apache 700

I wonder how many people when panic hits them remember where the extinguisher is straight away.

Ours is in a cubby hole next to the driver's seat just in front of the Hab door and about 1/2 metre from the kitchen.

Location seems to cover a lot of eventualities.

My kitchen is next to the hab door and so is the fire extinguisher but having taken expert advice on another thread, I will be chucking the dog out the door (or window) and following closely behind.

Me too. I probably wouldn’t bother with one, because I’m following the mantra ‘Get Out. Stay Out. Get the Brigade Out.’ There’s nowhere in our rear lounge set up that you could get trapped. Except possibly the shower. If there was, I’d put it there, with a fire blanket in the kitchen.

unless you have actually experienced a fire, you can't really understand the way you will react. To then know what is happening and be able to effectively tackle the fire is a step outside most people's comfort zone. Most of us are hardwired to fear fire and the fight or flight instinct means most will run
