newbie
what's the best inverter, generator/ antenna for campsites, or off grid.any advice welcome thanks

You shouldn't need an inverter or generator if you are on a campsite, just use their EHU. Off grid, better to get as much solar on the roof as you can and a large battery bank. What will you be wanting to use the inverter for?
Antenna for wifi?

EHU is Electric Hook Up.. Is your tv 12v? if not buy a 12v tv and use your 12v socket. You are correct in saying the mains sockets wont work as they are 230v so you need mains power.

We all had to start somewhere. Its mind boggling in the beginning but you've joined a great helpful site.

I think the first thing you have to do is look at what you already have,.. Do you have any Solar panels? One or two leisure batteries and what size? Look on your tv and see if its 12v and got a 12v lead. An inverter is only recommended for very short periods as it will drain your battery.

Ok, what type and size is the battery in amp hrs? What make/model is the tv? Have a look around and see if you see a booster box somewhere. Have you tried retuning the TV? You usually need to retune it every time you move location.

Have retuned but says no channels detected so am thinking maybe needs new antenna

get solar panels as many as will fit, decent pure sine wave inverter and a few good batteries (don't have to be lithium) can't understand why anyone would be satisfied with only 12v accessories when the technology is out there for 240v.

Is your TV set to receive Digital TV (DTV) or Analogue TV - now no longer transmitted in the UK. The Menu option on your tv should allow you to select the type of signal you receive......

Running 12v devices are much more efficient to run. Running 230v equipment off grid means using an inverter and they are only around 85% efficient.

Try looking on your tv remote for "source" you've still not said what make and model the tv is.

One thing I would maybe suggest regarding the TV...Do you have a subscription to any of the streaming services such as Netflix, HBO-GO or anything like that? If so, you could look into purchasing a dongle (a very small box, about the size of a box of matches) which plugs into the HDMI port of your tv. You then connect that to any WiFi source ( many people just connect it to their mobile phone, others have a separate wireless internet router which is charged/powered through USB). This then turns your 12v tv into a smart tv allowing you to watch the aforementioned streaming services (plus a great deal more) without needing to tune into anything at all.

most van tv antenae need to be powered. You need to switch on the amplifier, often hidden in the wardrobe. And some like the status 530 need to be turned to suit the direction of the signal, like on a house. Again usually a pole in the wardrobe, but remember to drop it back down before driving off

Aerial needs to point DIRECTLY at the local TV transmitter mast before tuning.... If it isn't pointing directly at the mast you won't get a signal.
You will have to do this EVERY time you change locations.
Where's the local transmitter?
Loads of apps giving direction.
