Was a Newbie but getting the hang of it now.
The C&MC book advises people heading to the Hawes site to avoid the A684 from the M6.
Does anyone know the reason why?
Also I'm travelling from Hawes back to the M6, is it okay from this direction.
Came here past Ribblehead viaduct.

In places it’s quite narrow and not an easy drive - but no worse than other roads in the area. Probably the guidance is particularly geared to caravans? We’ve done it both ways, and at the time had a Bailey, wider than most MHs - but I was glad when we were through the narrower bits!

Cheers for that think will give it a go as still windy here and Ribblehead is exposed!

Probably too late now..... but a lovely alternative is....

Hawes, west on A684, turn right onto B6259 towards Aisgill, Outhgill, Nateby and Kirkby Stephen.
Turn Left on A685 towards Tebay and join M6 there.
This avoids the narrow section of the A684

B6259 follows a lovely valley and follows the Settle - Carlisle line in places. Kirkby Stephen is a nice market town with parking at the Auction Mart.
Adventure Leisure Vehicles at Tebay is a small campervan/caravan dealership that specialises in Hymer & Eriba.

Safe travels,
Barry

My neck of the woods at one time. Perfectly fine in a Moho (at least ours, at 7.45m) There's a couple of tight very narrow bridges which are possible but tight with a big caravan, which is what C&MC directions also have to cater for.

You get loads of silly advice in C and M Club book....I have read many avoid this route comments when the route is completely adequate,,busby.

I think they have to cater to lowest common denominator , which from what I have seen is pretty low :)

Picked up a nasty window scratch on that road.

the advice has to cover a wide range of unit sizes and configurations as well as abilities. It’s not silly but it may not apply to everyone.

That's the route we use.
ALV used to be the UK Airstream caravan agent until Swift got involved.

Correct. Seen a big twin axle caravan get into problems on that route. Grounding and "cutting the corner".

Started out on the A684 with SWMBO behind the wheel as we are both newbies at MH's we decided to turn back after only a few miles and went back past ribblehead. Hardly anyone on the road so a nice drive till it rained on the M6.
Thanks for your advise and views.

The road is closed. Couldn’t get past going that way on Sunday. Not sure why but confirmed by locals.

Generally Speaking. IF there is a Bus Service? even a school bus, using the road it will be perfectly adequate in most motorhomes?. I used that as a yardstick with the R-V. and never came unstuck.

I’ve driven eight legged tippers on there many times. It’s no problem to any reasonably able driver. You’ll have no problem in something the size of of a motorhome.
