Firstly I'd like to apologise for my ignorance in these matters but here goes...

Our new to us van has a Maxview satellite dome fitted. Our tele that we had in our Bessacarr is an Avtex (non satelite) unit that we used through the aerial fitted to the bessacarr without an issue.

I understand that we won't be able to get anything on our Avtex as it's not got a satelite receiver built in but my question is:

What satelite receiver should we get in order to be able to watch freeview or any free to air channels on our old TV.

I just don't want to have to go out an buy a new tele when our Avtex is still working but just not compatible with the dome.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Paul

first thing is do you want a mains one or one that can run on 12v for wild camping

You won’t get Freeview, but will get Freesat. All you need is a 12v receiver. We have a Humax HB1100s. It comes with a 240-12v adapter but in the van you can power it with a 12v adapter.
You will get all the Freesat channels.
The Humax is great for use in the U.K., but if you go to France, ( depending on the size of your dish) it will soon lose the ability to pick up anything.
We also have a Micro M310 12V HD Satellite Receiver, which will allow us to pick up satellite signals further down and into Spain.
We also have a French TV ( TNT) receiver if we want to go native.

As above have mentioned..Free sat boxes are relatively cheap and easy to set up. An old Sky box will act as a receiver without a card for free-view tv but it is limited to certain stuff available.
Humax does the job well ...there are various types and quite cheap too

If staying in uk your dome should be sufficient, but signal reduces dramatically on mainland europe the further south and east you get. We often use a kindle firestick via avtex usb port and stream bbc / itv etc which maybe an option to consider - depending on wifi / data allowance

In our old van, we used a Sky box plugged in to a small 150w inverter with a KVH dome and an old Avtex TV. We used the Sky card from home to see all our usual channels - except premium channels i.e. movies and sport, which we don't have anyway. If we forgot the card, we just had the free to air channels :giggle:

We are still toying with the idea of satellite for our new van (PVC) but trying the Wifi and Sky Go option at the moment.

Hi we use a Freesat Manhattan SX box we got from Argos 240v to 12v power adaptor comes with it, just got 12v power cable to run off MH

Well thanks everyone for the help. I like the idea if the small unit Dave linked to, thanks Dave, but all the other advice is very helpful too. I've got a sky HD Box that we made redundant last year in favour of a Humax freesat that records etc, but I've also got a freesat box in the loft that was my mums that doesn't record and is quite small.

So, I could try that to start couldn't I? It needs to be 12v though cause we wild most of the time. A 240v-12v adapter? I've probably got loads of them laying around but I wouldn't know what it is if it just plugs in the wall??? Unless it's got a fag lighter end always assume it's 240v...That's how ignorant I am.

Right, off to the loft then....

I've just realised re read the answers again. So, what I need is to find one that uses a 240v to 12v adapter as standard then when we are wilding I can just use it on 12v? Are they all mostly low voltage units that run off an adapter, like crimbo lights for examale?

Yeah Paul most of the smaller units are 12v thats why you need a 240v to 12v adaptor for use in the house but in the van you can just run it from a ciggy adaptor

Athough no longer made but still available one of the best boxes are the Icecrypt see post #11 above Sandra has one for sale.

Maxview dish.
Can anyone tell me the answer to ths wee question, I am looking at getting a free standing Maxview sat dish. Not sure wether the 55 or 65cms as yet. For uk use only, but both models come in either a 12 or 19? What does the 12 or 19 mean?
Tried calling Maxview today but they close at 1pm.
Any informed replies would be much appreciated.
