Swift Kon-Tiki 660
Hi all, just wondering what this bit of kit is in my 2006 kontiki 660. It looks like some kind of inverter but has easy cool on it. The van has air con on it so maybe something to do with that? There is nothing in the handbook. Thanks.

probably right, inverter for air con

Read the 3rd line, I think it says air compressor?

Thanks Tombola for that link. Definitely to do with that air con system. Strangely enough there was one of the thick red wires from the battery to the inverter disconnected. Wonder if it was disconnected because the inverter had packed up. Only had van a few months and not tried running the air con yet. Will have to investigate further.

Inverters take a surprising amount of power even if they are just connected with no load at all. OK if you are always on the move or have plenty of solar and sunshine. But if there's no isolator switch you might want to disconnect it if in storage mode.

Aircon takes a lot of power, and soon drains a standard MH leisure battery. Most MHs can't fit enough solar on the roof to run aircon indefinitely, which is why aircon is not very popular. It needs a mains hookup, generator or power from the engine/alternator. With a few big batteries it can run for a limited time in low-power mode when off-grid.

The aircon is mains-powered, so to run from 12V it needs an inverter. It also needs a circuit to monitor the battery so it isn't discharged enough to damage it.

Thanks guys. As everything in the van functions perfectly, and the air con runs when on hook up, I have decided to leave the positive, battery to inverter, cable disconnected, cannot see us using it too often and as has been said , I think running on 12v will kill it. At least I know what it's for now, thanks to all for the replies.
