Yep, I've done many a long shift driving Artics, but vowed never to do nights. I stopped doing Friday daytime runs, due to the horrendous queues heading north on the M25, M11, A1M, and M1. It was like every man and his dog were heading north on a Friday.

Last weekend we done 210 miles each way to look at and inspect the motorhome we put offer in on (8 horus in total according to car).. In a day as had to be back the following day. Also in an Electric car, so anyone saying they can't do 450 miles in a day talks rubbish. Didn't even cause any additional stops beyond what we would have done in the old Diesel. (Stopped for toilet breaks, breakfast and charged during. We did plan stops with > 3 charge points to guarantee availability though). This for us wasn't a long drive. A long drive is 5 hours plus each way, ie, not really viable round trip in a day.

Is it not just distance but duration?

15 years ago, before speed cameras, in a Renault Espace, overloaded with 4 big chaps and all their clothes and scuba kit for a week got off ferry from Orkneys at Scrabster and was back in Surrey at 9:30pm. I think my passengers were rather shell-shocked. Not so much the pace, but the toilet breaks were so short they didn't get time for snacks.

But in the last fortnight doing the Wild Atlantic Way on a daily basis I'm averaging 6-7 hours between setting off and stopping for night. I do get out briefly to look around but am mostly on the move. But with windy, lumpy uppy downy roads mileage isn't high and average speed can be as little as 25mph on a day.

Very rarely drive more than three hours with a break half way ..why make your holiday hard work.

I often read on here about long drives. I drove from Bristol to Doncaster to collect an e-bike from Scout (lovely couple). 180 miles each way. Due to a visit from the gas man we had to be back for the next day. With several stops, including refreshments at Scouts, all done in under 11 hours. All done under the national speed limit and any other imposed limit for road works/lane blockage/congestion. Both of us had no ill effects for being stuck in the seat for a long time. It was also a very hot day and cab A/C was only just working above 60 mph so I had to keep behind the lorries or melt.
The plan was to stop over but as gas man was due, and appointments are as rare as hospital ones and not to be missed. Already made arrangements to collect the bike so day trip it was.

I did a trip in February this year. I left Bristol (work) drove to Accrington (home) quick shower and changed then drove to Inverness to do a deal and then drove back home, a trip of 920 miles about 17 hours in total including fuel stops and “T” breaks.
