I've just been persuaded to upgrade from my faithful PAYG nokia that just made calls and texts, to a new Samsung smart phone. What apps do you use that are useful to our hobby of motor-homing.? I'm not into social media or games, but anything that improves our travels appreciated thanks.

If you're a Sky subscriber, the SkyGo app can be a good addition

If you have an Android phone then a good combination is to use Google Maps for navigation and at the same time use TomTom AmiGO for speed cameras and a digital GPS speedometer.

The TomTom AmiGO can be made to to use overlay mode so you can view your GPS speed and the current speed limit which floats on top of Google Maps.

Google Maps also displays some speed info.

Don't forget you need a data allowance in your phone contract so that you can access many of the apps. Okay a good number also work "off-line" but you still need to get them onto your phone.

At home obviously I connect to my home broadband and away I generally use a mifi in the van with a PAYG 3 datasim that gives me 24gb for up to 2 years to use as and when I want/need. That way I don't have to worry about monthly contracts that I'll never use fully and I've got a no strings deal with Penny mobile 1p per minute, 1p per text, 1p per mb data. Works abroad too. However if you intend to be a somewhat heavier data user there's lots of good deals about.

Otherwise lots of good suggestions for apps. We enjoy visiting National Trust and English Hertiage (when they're open) so use those to find somewhere when we're out and about.

WiFi via mobile phone transmitters.
Typically small size like this: -

lol - hard to scale that. It’s about 7cm x 12cm x 1cm
The main advantage is being able to connect 10 devices without someone having to tether* their phone and be stuck in the van.

One con I found out the hardware is that connected devices think they’re on a real WiFi and will download lots of data and burn through your monthly data allowance.
Even that is easily fixed in the device’s setting. You need to stop auto photo sync, auto upgrades, etc.

edit: *- tether is when a phone is used as a personal hotspot to share that phone’s data connection as WiF to others.

PlaneFinder , really interesting when you are sat on your pitch and sky gazing !
That's done it, i've turned into a right anorak now I have installed this app. The amount of Gliders up over central France and Switzerland yesterday was amazing.

These are the colour coded sites i have to play with so i dont need to cross referemce anything. Click the aire and i get a summary eg 6 euros water electricity 2 max stay 4 . And a couple of reviews. All off line.
You need to download the areas map whilst having wifi.
I also use it to know where i have parked bike in big towns. TO offices for ease of reference.
It is possible to share the 25000 places

That’s an impressive app, which one is it ?

You need WhatsApp and MotorhomeFun

That's really handy to have - thanks for sharing. I think I will look into getting this too.

I've just had a quick look at maps.me without downloading and have a couple of questions for you suavecarve
Do your maps include Aires/Stellplatz? - I can only see campsites listed but not done a detailed search of those campsites to see if that sections includes Aires.

Do you have to download the App before you can see a screen of the map that you have copied to here?
I've just selected Luxembourg and campsites to try view any Aires and it only shows a local street map for each campsite with some photos - not a country map with locations of the campsites.

Thanks!

My points of interest are generated and added to what is already there. I colour cded them for france passion water only etc.
In order to get them message me with your phone number. Then i can add you whattsapp i think and i can share the files with you.
Now when you receive the files i think what you do is open them with maps.me

One that I find indispensable now is Moovit. It gives you realtime travel options for public transport, buses, trains metros etc across the world. Simply type in your destination and it will direct you to walk say 200yds to a bus stop (named and street name) wait 8 minutes for the number xx bus, travel 7 stops etc etc. Works on short and long journeys. And will work across numerous connections.

I am well impressed and have used it for 4 years, here and right across Europe. It has never been wrong in even the large towns and cities in eastern Europe and the Balkans. It also worked in all the major towns and cities of Crete. If I had to have just one app it would be that one. Now more expensive taxis and ubers.
