Another daft question if you don't mind?

Do you guys turn your water pump on and off whilst parked up, or leave it on for the duration of your stay? I've been switching it on and off as required, but was wondering if that's the correct way to do it.

Thanks,

Arron.

I don't know if there is a right or wrong way but I switch mine off in case I spring a leak when I'm not in the van or I'm sleeping heavy, read, had one to many.

Our UK spec Motorhome is always turning off power to the habitat area whenever the ignition is on - the water pump with it.
When we’re in the Motorhome at a camping stop we’ll leave the pump on all the time.
Only turning it off when we walk away but only if we remember that our cats may accidentally turn taps on.

When not in use at home the water pump will be off as the taps are open to help the draining task.

Whenever we're using the van the pump generally gets left on. Our Burstner allows the hab area to be powered wherever the keys are so it just stays powered ready to be used. We have microswitched taps in case that helps you in your decision in any way!

We turn our water pump off at bedtime or if we head out for a bit during the day. Only because of that van anxiety 😳 that I cant quite seem to shift. In fact its not uncommon for me to have a dream where its either stolen, stripped bare or I just lost somewhere

You obviously don’t need nighttime visits to the loo then. Our pump is switched on as soon as we park up and left on. In 30 years we have never had a problem.

Depends on the system, one with microswitches on the taps no need to turn it off as if the taps are turned off so is the power to the pump.

If its a pressure switched system it's advisable to turn the pump off when not in the van, as if you do develop a slight leak the pump can run, risk of flooding the van. Pressure pumps like the Sureflo can be run dry without harm.

Last year I changed my tap switched system for a Sureflo pressure switched system, said I would always turn it off when I left the van. So far I haven't remembered and it's stayed on for the duration of rhe trip.

Someone had the problem of a pipe coming loose and thus activated the pump.....when they got back from their walk, they opened the door and a river ran out
And that's why we always turn ours off, be it a pressurised system, or a micro switched system, as you just never know. :(

A tugger friend some years ago went out for the day leaving his pump on, and due to a slight leak and a drop in pressure, the pump would kick in thereby setting off the alarm every few minutes, annoying everybody around. I disconnected the pump from the external connection point, which solved the noise problem. After that, he always turned the pump off before leaving the caravan. (y)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

I was advised by the dealer that it's always good practice to turn it off when not in use. That's why it doesn't come on automatically when turning on the control panel.
You don't leave a light on all day when you don't need it.
Unlike a light the pump doesn’t run all the time, only when the pressure switch or tap switch activates it. In your analogy turning off the pump is more like turning off the entire lighting circuit.

The reason I ask is, not long after I bought the van, there was a leak at the filter when I turned the pump on. I spoke with a local caravan dealer who asked if I'd only be holidaying in Scotland. I said yes, for now at least. They gave me a section of pipe and told me to remove the filter as it's a common weak spot and a filter is not required with Scottish water. I think I've been a little paranoid about another leak occurring with leaving the system pressurised, so as a matter of course, I've just powered it on and off as and when required.

For information, I've got a Sureflo water pump in my camper.

Thanks,

Arron.

I think the filter filters debri etc from contaminating the actual pump itself, I don't think its a limescale filter

Has anybody ever been in the khazi, just finished a dump and realised the bloody pump is off? 🤣

Oh just me then 😆 we leave it on now I've fixed the PRV leak 👍 unless we're out.

Oh I well remember that, it used to drive us nuts, fortunately our MH is German so we don't have to mess about with it anymore and just leave it on all the time we're using it.

The beauty of a SOG !

If you open the blade and the extractor fan doesn't come on then you know the pump is switched off.....

Always have a spray bottle of water near the loo.
