I am hoping to get a gadget to monitor the internal temperature of the van, that will talk my phone. I want to be able to check the temperature when we leave the dog in the van.

Can anyone reccommend such and gadget please?

Not quite what you want but similar idea.

If you have Truma heating you could fit a Inet box, you can also set up alerts when it reaches a set temperature.

Have you already got a WiFi hotspot in the van? The 'device' needs to talk to your phone via the Internet, so it needs a way to connect. If not, the 'device' is going to need a mobile phone SIM card...

Rather than looking for something for dogs or motorhomes, maybe you can find just a wifi thermostat (intended for a house) that just connects up with USB. It won't be able to adjust the temperature (unless you hook it up to a fan or something) but it would at least give you current conditions. I'm thinking something like a Nest???

Yes we have a Mifi. I need something that will talk to my phone, maybe via an app. It doesn't have to turn anything on, I just need to know my dog is not getting too warm. If I can see the temperature starting to rise, I can return to the van before it gets too much.

I didn't think of this before leaving the UK and hope to pick something up in France.

If you are handy with electronics and internet of things, then you can probably hack something together for about £20.

There must be off-the-shelf solutions. I found this for £65 with a quick search. There must me more.

Here in France we have an Alexa Amazon Echo Plus speaker with a temperature monitor-bit dear-but sales soon. Will also translate & make Skype calls I think.

DBK has already done this.
This was the thread.

It doesn't describe any wiring diagram but a Google search will throw up descriptions, for example:http://www.circuitbasics.com/raspberry-pi-ds18b20-temperature-sensor-tutorial/

The code could be modified to send an immediate alert if the temperature rose above a certain threshold but from experience it doesn't change quickly so I haven't felt this necessary so far.

If you decide to go for it let me know as there is quite a bit more needed to get the Pi working and entering the code but again everything is out there - it was how I managed. :)

My biggest fear would be parking the van in an area with no signal so it couldn't send the alert, me walking off to an area with no signal so I couldn't receive the alert, the device failing / crashing / whatever and not even sending the alert.

Can you not take your dog with you? I'm sure it'd love to tag along :)

I would check the signal before leaving the van. My 9 year old border terrier does not usually want to come on a two - three hour bike ride in the mountains.

I don't want a system that sends an alert, ideally I want to be able to check in with said device on a regular basis. To put your mind at rest, this gadget would be something like a 4th line defence against the dog getting too hot.

Thanks for all the suggestion. After a bit more research item seems to be an easy solution. We have 3 temperature gauges dotted around the van so could make sure the camera can see one of them. We will also be able to see what she is up to when left - mainly sleeping on our bed I expect!!

Never thought of that! Can you contact it to find out the current temperature of the house, when out and about?

I don't quite get this, surely if there is a risk that your dog will get overheated you simply don't leave it? On the rare occasions when its too hot to safely leave them we don't, we just stay there for the day.

The disadvantage of the camera method is that it doesn't alert you, you have to manually check it all the time.

Everybody lives their lives differently Mel.

My dog is never, ever in danger of being too hot, but I want an extra precaution in place. I could list the precautions we take, there are many, which have worked well in over 5 years of motorhoming.

A novel way would be get a cheap wireless security camera placed in the van with a thermometer in its field of vision. You could look at the camera using an app when you wanted. I know there are cameras with rechargeable batteries but they may be a lot more money but it would only need a low watt inverter if there weren’t 12 volt.

If you can't locate said camera to see the already fitted temperature gauges... would be cheap enough to buy a cheapie stand alone one (y) .

Think she said she didn't want alerts but a method of monitoring the temperature.

I do this with an SMS card so i get a message above 26º (or what ever i set it too). SMS is much more reliable than a wifi connection. I used parts from an old aquarium computer that runs off 12v.

If i needed to build one from scratch now for the van then i'd use an Arduino with a build similar to this:

I think Mobeye do an off the shelf unit with 12v supply called Thermoguard or similar, probably not cheap though.

My current controller manages a few more things these days though.....

Including 2 integrated webcams, allows me to keep an eye on the fish while we're away in the van, all of course on my phone.
