Thinking of getting VPN on laptop/phone etc but don't know a lot about it.Would appreciate info and recommended make please.

Well I use Express vpn, its expensive but very good.
Suggest you read the reviews on the web to understand the differences between them and then decide how much you want to pay and how much you need one.

Another vote for a it always works fine.Express VPN. One subscription covers a multitude of PCs and phones

Surfshark works well for me, cheaper than many.

Do VPN's slow done your upload / download speeds?
In my experience, generally not enough to notice, but server selected can sometimes make a difference. I guess it all depends on how much ‘traffic’ the server is handling. In the UK Surfshark gives you two server options, London & Manchester and the latter is generally faster.

If you are going to use free or public WiFi then a VPN can give additional security but if like us you do everything through the MiFi then they are not necessary I think.

The only exception is if you are using a service which insists you are in the UK. For example, iPlayer will work with a UK sourced SIM card but not a locally sourced one. A VPN might get around this - but not always. :)
So it boils down to asking yourself why you think you need one and if you decide you need a VPN how do you choose one which is safe? As opposed to one which just seems to work for folk. :)

VPNs can be used to hide your activity, which may be something important to some but for me they just add complexity - and people in the loop I am not sure I can always trust.

But then I do use a Huawei MiFi!

A Funster recommended Vpnify on Fun...
It's free.
It's fast.
It works.

JJ

PS... a vpn means you can watch/listen/download stuff that you are blocked from using because you are not in the right "region". (BBC in Portugal)

There is only one reason to get a VPN these days. That is to watch media that is geographically restricted.

If you don't want to do this don't bother jumping through hoops to get one working...

If you do want it for this reason, then don't do it on all devices, just on the one you will use for view the media in question.

Daughter uses Nord VPN to watch all sorts of rubbish on her TV in Bangladesh, she says it works very well but it’s a subscription one.

another vote for surfshark, it works for me at a price i think is reasonable.

We use Smartdnsproxy, means we can watch iplayer where we like.

We have a VPN setup on our router at home. This allows us to connect remotely can then browse as though at home. If you have a capable router this the cheapest method and so far very reliable. Had to change the ISP provided router we bought a TPLink AC1900 (VR900), not the best but does exactly what we require at home. If you just want access UK services this could be cost effective option.

We also use nordvpn works well hides our location etc.. allows us to appear in US or Europe.

Co- Incidently. I spoke to youngest son just a few hours ago, on the very subject. He troubleshoots I-T at code level, for Multinational companies. Including a well known "mobile" provider. My question was, Does it improve security?. He reckons the best actually do. His vote is for Nordvpn. The "free" ones come with some restrictions, and occasional issues.

Another vote for Nord vpn for me anyway ?
