Would love to do a day trip to the coast and go for a quick swim.. and maybe sunbathe..

Live in Oxford and looking to take van to a carpark with beach access... somewhere not to popular so I hope choosing Monday will help ..returning same day..

suggestions please...

Thanks... unusually for me don't wish to be within 2 metres of anyone... so want to go from van to beach with shortest distance

Watch out...went to B&Q today to get some wood to make a scooter base for my MH garage...easier than roof rack on car as went straight into the Motorhome .....big 4x4 pulled up alongside and and some moralising twat shouted abuse at me for being out in a Motorhome. Presumably he thought I was holidaying in a B&Q car park.

Just been down to Keyhaven, it’s like a meet down there! Motor homes, campers along the road. Nice atmosphere and dogs enjoyed their swim. Enjoy your trip.

Thanks for that... picked Monday as hoping it might be a quiet day... expect water to be cold so just a baptism or Ganges dip :giggle:

h1ghway1 , sorry can’t suggest any beaches with easy parking, not lived here long enough to suds them all out yet. Probably google maps is your best bet. Seem to be some pebble beaches and a few sandy ones. I think Highcliffe and Barton on Sea might be sand but no idea of parking/access. The parking areas in the New Forest are now open if that helps.

We are going to Hayling Island on Tuesday, mother in law is in sheltered accomodation facing the beach. She has not been allowed visitors since March, although it has been widely abused. She can zoom across to the beach on her buggy and we can keep our distances enjoying the sunshine.

A trip to the beach, something worth dying for.

At the moment many of the usually "quiet" East coast "Spots" are being used by family groups for beach picnics!.

As For "dying". "We`re all Gonna Die". That and Taxes are the 2 most certain things in life!. My own philosophy is "Quality" over "Quantity". Take reasonable precautions, and then go and LIVE a life, not exist it.

"Life is not tried it is merely survived
If you're standing outside the fire… "

Really?

This is a motorhome forum so its not unreasonable for members to ask questions about using their motorhomes without being subjected to rubbish like this.

The current thinking seems to be that you are less likely to get it in an open space anyway.

Cotswold Water Park? There is a lake that’s been turned into the seaside and it’s only a few miles away.

Barton on sea is shingle. There are pay and display car parks but you can park on the road for free. We have considered a trip to the coast but decided we don’t want to get caught up in the crowds.

West Wittering has a nice sandy beach but beware of the tide and current. I looks like it is pre book only though.

I was born and brought up in Oxford. Getting to the sea was an an all day expedition once a year. Train to Paddington, walk down to Victoria Station and then train to one of these 4 destinations, Gt Yarmouth, Bournemouth, Weymouth or Minehead. Those endless clickety clack journeys!

We used to go on a working man's club outings to Southsea and other coastal resorts so fairly easy, just couple of miles walk to and from the club. Never gave it a thought at the time but three buses, three kids under ten years old for a week's holiday was some achievement.

During our "New Forest" holiday we spent several hours at Lepe Pay&Display carpark adjacent to sea with views across to IoW. Obviously a slow drive for the last few miles!

Calshot (P&D) was also pleasant, with the advantage of a campsite (presumably closed atm) and a museum, but the beach didn't look to be popular for swimming.

However, there is loads of free parking along Marine Parade W at Lee-on-Solent (if being a FLT is a primary consideration ;) ) and a short drive round to Hillhead gives an alternative perspective.

Enjoy and stay safe - Gordon

Hayling Island. One road on, one road off, if you do decide this option then make it an "all day" event and dont bother leaving til well after the crowds have left the beach.
Calshot you wont even get close to in your motorhome with the parking when the car park is full.
There is a huge pebble beach next to Selsey which has a wildlife sanctuay for the birds and you wont see anybody there but parking is an issue as only 20 or so cars and then a walk of about a mile, but it will be EMPTY.
If i were to take the motorhome down for the day I think I would go early to Southborne/Boscombe which I think is free parking within 100 yards of beach on main drag but white lined parking. Around here somewhere (dont quote me on the free parking as it has been a while since i went down there)

Sandwich Bay Estate in Kent, costs a tenner all day with a MH. Never very crowded for that reason. It is a very long beach sand and shingle at high tide. Late afternoon tide this week. Oh has it’s own website , there is a bird observatory there, No facilities whatsoever so come prepared . We are going down Tuesday hopefully. It backs on to the Royal St George ´s Golf course.

In this last week like many I have noticed that traffic levels seem to have returned to "Normal" cuing at roundabouts is back guys!
Having seen the pictures of people crowding out beaches everywhere , along with the pictures of the crowds at Durdle Door, Dorset yesterday, I can only assume every beach will be packed out especially in this weather.

I too would love to take the MH for a day out, but I certainly wont take the risk of going anywhere near a beach on The South Coast yet, not only are too many people still off work on furlough, and too many of those attending these mass gathering places are not observing the SD Rules/advice.

Being as OH TinaL is of the high risk fraternity, the risk outweighs the reward, so we will either stay put for now or maybe stay inland if we do go out.
Having said that even Frensham Ponds near us at Farnham, had police involvement recently, due to the high numbers of rule breakers.
It would appear that most youngsters feel as the lock down, Stay at Home message has gone, everything is back to normal for them, and its tough s##t for anyone that's very "Old" over 40!

Have a good time wherever you go, but expect some flack if you take the a motor home anywhere yet, especially an A Class or Coach built. Those fortunate to have PVC's are a lot more stealthy than we are. ;)
All the best to you & yours.
LES:eek:

Thanks all...

Tomorrow is off .. neighbour has managed to bag a Tee-time at Golf course.. looking at Tuesday now and weather forecast not so good....hopefully fewer people around..

Due to the problems of crowds at Lulworth/Durdle Door and several other beach car parks along the Dorset coast the car parks have now been closed.
I’m beginning to think that too many people are being paid too much by the government to enable so many to travel. The number of “ bloody idiots “ on motor bikes riding past our place at horrendous speeds and the noise when there are three or four of them going for it is getting me pissed off. And, I used to sell the things !

If these “ lemmings “ are not afraid of being inches apart in these crowds then they should go back to work.

My wife and I have been in “ lockdown “ since the 17th of March, wife’s had to go to our local Waitrose as we could’nt get delivery slots on two occasions, I will be really be annoyed if we have to go into lockdown again due to inconsiderate actions.

Tomorrow we intend to drive the camper to a quiet spot we know in the countryside and go for an energetic hilly walk, we’ll take the camper as we will need the loo before we get home.

And there to my mind is the one thing that dictates WHY we need the "van" We are at the age where if the "facilities" are not available (eg; Pubs are closed?) we become virtual prisoners in our own homes without recourse to the Motorhome!. Especially on longer journeys.
