With the Victron smartshunt you can monitor a second battery using the auxiliary connection, looking at the image below what size wire would be needed for the second battery negative, I assume 2.5mm will do but in the image it looks like HD battery cable.

The wires complete with Fuses came with our BMV 712. they are really thin wires with a 1amp glass fuse

Likewise with my SmartShunt.

You will need to go to the second battery positive from the shunt and I used the van chassis for the negative rather than run an additional cable.
You will only get the voltage of the second battery on the Victron Connect app, no other data for the second battery.

The aux input is a voltage measurement, not an amps measurement. The current (amps) flowing in a voltage measurement is microamps, certainly less than a milliamp. Any wire will do, but about 1.5mm2 is a good idea in a vibration-prone environment like a vehicle.

In a motorhome the starter negative is connected to the leisure battery negative by thick wires and/or the metal chassis, so an extra negative voltage sensing wire is not necessary.

Is it your starter battery you are wanting to monitor?

Yes, the auxiliary wire comes with the shunt but the instructions say the neg on the second battery the starter battery in my case needs to connect to output neg on the shunt.

That's all I need so all good

Apologies for my replies above! I mis-read your post and thought you were asking about the +ve cables. Must put my glasses on next time. :giggle:
