I took my van for an MOT test today and when I went online to renew the VED the cost has gone up from £165 (or there abouts) to £265 for 12 months .Can anyone suggest why this would be the case. Vehicle is a Euro 5 Renault Master, 2.3 dci 3500kg.
Have I been paying too little previously or has there been major changes to the VED taxation.

£165 is the rate for PHG vehicles over 3500 kg.
PLG vehicles 3500kg and under the correct rate is £265.

Thanks for that, perhaps I had better whisper this but I have previously only been paying approx £160ish.

It appears that you have been paying the wrong rate previously if your MH has a max of 3500kg and should have been £265, however if it has been uprated then it should be £165.

£265 came up when taxed online today.

Very strange I have taxed 2 PLG vehicles in the last month and they were both £270, what year is yours? One of mine is 62, and one 66, could make a difference now.

2014 but still classified on V5 as van and not motor caravan, don't know if that makes any difference.

Got your wires crossed Minxy Girl he’s talking about PLG yours is PHGV 😊👍
No I haven't - re-read it ... I was replying to Metamoros's post who said a PLG is currently £270 not £265 for a MH up to 3500kg; I was just going by what had been mentioned previously and hadn't checked the current rate for a MH up to 3500kg so assumed the £265 quoted was correct for a PLG, hence my comment to 'support' why I wasn't aware of the 'current' PLG costs being that I've only paid £165 for a MH over 3500kg for years as we've had PHGVs for yonks as per my earlier post explaining the different cost.

So :moon2: to you!

Why do you take any comment I make to you as an insult I was only assuming you had read it wrong and you don’t need to show me your backside every time😊

The PLG rate (TC11) is currently £270 and applies to vehicles registered as motorhomes with a MGW below 3500kgs. I paid that to retax mine 2 weeks ago.

The light goods vehicle rate (TC39) is currently £265. The only way I can see that being applied is if the vehicle is a PVC which hasn't been registered as a motorhome via final stage CoC.

The PLG rate only applies to petrol and diesel vehicles registered prior to 1st March 2001, and motorhomes that have been slotted into the category after that date because they have no CO2 figure on the final stage CoC.

The light goods vehicle rate of £265 applies solely to goods vehicles below 3500kg MGW and first registered on or after 1st March 2001.

I've recently paid £270 VED. The lower rate for MHs over 3500 kg is a bizarre anomaly.

For a small large fee I won't tell DVLA they should raise it. :whistle2:

All contributions to my beer fund gratefully received (hint).

VERY WEIRD...Oki doki this post has brought the sleuth out of me and I realise something was amiss....now I apologise if I got this wrong but I have just been on Gov website 're motorhome road tax and this is what i think it says

Private or light goods (TC11)
Vehicles less than 3500kg
Engine cc<1549....£165
Engine cc>1549....£270
So it looks to me under 3500kg they have reverted to the car system of engine size...can't be many moho out there less than 1549cc

HOWEVER Private heavy goods (TC10) over 3500kg is still £165 regardless.

Interesting as it was today when I renewed online after the MOT was done and it was £265.

It does make a difference, yours is still classed as a van and not a motorhome the VED is now £265.

Motorhomes now come under a separate category, though I am fairly sure that motorhomes under 3500 were taxed at the same rate until fairly recently, VED is now £270.
