I'm debating upplating my van from 3500KG to something higher (licence, van, etc all ok)

But I'm not sure what this will mean for the London Low Emission Zone.

Am I right in thinking that a change in taxation class to PHGV won't make any difference on the LEZ? Because it's still a 'motorised caravan', regardless of the weight?

The TFL web site is vaguer than vague!

I just rang them up, even they didn't seem to know!

After being put on hold a few times and a handful of questions, they said they have an upper limit for "Motorised Caravans" of 5000KG.

They didn't say what happens after that

You need to check carefully..
My previous van was a Ducato 2.8jtd Euro 3...
As a 3500kg van / motorhome it was allowed.. HOWEVER as a 3850kg vehicle it was not.. ??
The engine was the same, the emmissions the same... Work that one out..

My 2004 Hymer at 3850kg is not LEZ compliant. However if it was downrated to 3500kg it would be compliant. It would also be compliant if it was registered after 1st October 2007. For info I live just inside the LEZ Zone.

If its below euro 5 replating over 3500kg will make it so you are restricted by the LEZ
I know I did it on my last van and my current one.

LEZ is not just Central London - it is almost everwhere inside the M25(and a little area outside on the East side).

Central London also has a Congestion Charge Zone for which any vehicle has to pay a fee to enter each day.

The two operate differently.

The year of first registration doesn't always seem to work for personal imports that have been re-registered by DVLA.

My previous 2002 PVC imported by me from Germany should have been accepted as Euro 3 and therefore LEZ compliant, but the TFL website check said otherwise. I could not be bothered to challenge this anomaly with TFL and decided never to drive inside the LEZ instead. If they secretly wanted to stop some MH owners benefitting the London economy, they succeeded.

The original LEZ contractor responsible for operating the system relied on the DVLA database to decide if a vehicle was exempt or not.

The DVLA database is notoriously inaccurate and there were many challenges.

Later and some years ago now Tfl changed the LEZ Contractor and the new one would accept other evidence. I know because I have a house inside the LEZ and was living there and managed to get my MH exempted by the new contractor.

However, many vehicles are still showing as non-exempt because of the DVLA and challenges have not been made.

Just cause mine can travel in the smoke , don't actually mean it ever will . It was okay as a 3500kg too when i checked , however i would keep an eye on it as i suspect it's likely to change at some point in the future . Not that it will make any difference to me , m25 will be the closest it will ever get .
I gotta be honest , i'm surprised it can , i've got no idea what euro it is , and to be totally honest i don't really care , that's not what i brought it for .

I'd stick my neck out and say parking would be all but impossible .

Congestion Charge Zone

And there another reason .

vehicles are still showing as non-exempt because of the DVLA and challenges have not been made.

Yep that's exactly what i'd suspect .
