Am I right in thinking that our UK TV set won't pick up any French channels when over there? If so, is there a cheap solution?

Your UK TV will pick up all French channels, justs needs tuning.

Only if it's a true HD TV with HD tuner built in. !! France went to a totally HD system quite a while ago.
A set top box can be bought at supermarkets etc.

Also if they are showing English/American films or programs you can turn off the dubbing and have English sound

What a lot of folk do not know is that you shoud leave the 'country' as England in the set up
That way, if there is english being transmitted as well as French you will get the English sound...
Does not happen too often in France, but Spain and Germany very often transmit in English as well as the 'home' language

Always set mine to France or Spain and it still works.

Ah thanks, don't think the one in m/h is full HD! Couldn't get anything when last there. Do I need a French set top box?

From what I have read on past posts, yes. Set top boxes available at larger supermarkets.
