Someone from this firm has arranged to buy my van and asked me for my bank details to pay a deposit.
Before doing that I want to check this is a real company.
Anyone help?

Even if you give them your bank details for them to pay the deposit. I am pretty sure they can’t use them to get at your money. Ring your bank and explain the situation to them. They will tell you if its ok . Also you will have forewarned them should any thing happen.

Have you thought about advertising privately? Sounds like they are selling quick at the moment.

Is this a real bloke or just on the internet, if it's a real buyer at your house , don't see any problems with getting money off him there and then but if it's just someone emailing you , forget it.

The only way of doing that is to do a search at Companies House.
Apart from that, what dealings have you had with them so far? Have you a draft contract? Any other written communication? Checked out their website?

I know this maybe old fashioned, but what is wrong with getting cash or even a cheque off him and paying it in yourself?

I've spoken to him on the phone. And looked him up but I have seen companies house

Cheques can bounce. Cash can be counterfeite

Hmmmm, companies house doesn't list the trading name Uk Motorhome Buyers and the address shown is a private residence.
A better detective then me might be able to find something but personally, I would be asking them more direct commercial questions before proceeding (y)

They've offered what I was going to take from a private buyer so I'm happy. Just wanted to check him out. I've ring my bank and told them.

Some years ago I had a lady respond to my advert when I was selling my car.. she came to the local railway station and I collected her and showed her the car. She said she wanted to buy it and transferred £500 to my account. She agreed to come for the car the following weekend with her boyfriend.

midweek I had a call saying the boyfriend (from Nigeria) wanted to pay me a bigger deposit and got shirty when I said I didn’t want any more as they were paying me the balance in full the following weekend..

at the weekend they were a no show and I kept the £500 as I gave them a month to complete and they declined...

I checked with the police and the bank and heard nothing else...

yours could be legitimate but I’d simply suggest your employ your common sense...if it seems strange then use your judgment and end the transaction

A cheque even with express clearance takes at least 3 days even then not 100% secure. Cash you may think it's OK after paying in but when they cash you at the end of the day if any forgeries you will loose.
Bank transfer by the faster payments system can not be clawed back it's the safest way.

I'll give him a bank account number then transfer it immediately into another account. Before he leaves with the van..

I've advertised in a few places including here. I had the price I was willing to take so I'm happy Plus if it is valid no worries about being scammed

Don't understand this deposit thing then, if he is coming for it why not just transfer the lot when he picks it up?

When I sold my last Harley it was to "we but any Harley.com" we agreed a price on the phone, they sent someone to collect he spent a lot of time trying to lower the price, but when I started to put the bike back in the shed, he paid up. I got cash but I took the man to the bank and paid it in there and then before he had the bike.

When I sold the Motorhome a dealer bought it, he paid a deposit into my bank, and again sent someone to pick it up no trying to chip me down this time, they did a bank transfer for the balance. The money came through in about ten minutes, the man collecting said that's good it can sometimes take a couple of hours

I believe but no authorised knowledge but it is possible for a payee to reclaim payments they've made.

Please check with your bank.
