Tyres over 10 years old to be banned, but not all!

May hit classic lorry / coaches from being road legal to attend shows such as Dorset Steam Fair and others

Not sure if it will include motorhomes, does include hgv front steering tyres or single axle tyres.
Yes retreads will only be allowed on drive axel not the front steering axel. Hgv retreads are a big buisness, even get retreads for aircrafts.

Too little too late.
Everyone wants stuff delivered for nothing so every angle is going to be exploited. Everyone wants something but nobody wants to pay for it, that’s life.

I found the spare tyre on our van had a date code making it sixteen years old. It had never been fitted and was stored under the van out of the sun light. Also it was a van tyre not a camper tyre.
When I took it to have the new tyre fitted the tyre fitter said”There’s nothing wrong with that”. Maybe it’s me being over cautious and I didn’t notice it for the first four years of owning the van but I am glad I didn’t fit it.
I havnt been back to that tyre centre since. I have used Tyres on the Drive or Black Circle and they were not fussed about me asking to see the date stamp on the new tyres.

Surely they will just have to fit tyres that are under 10 years old?

Nothing wrong with the 20 year old tyres I have on my classic Yamaha, only done about a thousand miles :giggle:

I think that the trouble with vintage stuff is it’s only made in batches now and then so could be X amount of years old before it is fitted

I would have thought that the increase in demand will ensure adequate supply

I know, for example, that Avon (and others) have a range of tyres for classic motorcycles, including race variants

I'm sure that classic lorry/coach enthusiasts will find a source for tyres

Are there any published studies showing the affects of tyre ageing? Without any hard evidence it is hard to see how these older tyres can be made illegal. Perhaps for vehicles operating for hire and reward there may be a case, not so sure about private vehicles. Think how many tyres would be required overnight, would cause major problems with folk unable to get a replacement. It would have to be a phased regulation, say tyres manufactured after 2025 to have a ten year life etc. Vehicles registered as Historic to be exempt.

If a spare shows no signs of age-related deterioration I'd be happy with it. If you have to fit a spare you are aware that you may be using a sub-standard tyre and can moderate your speed until it's replaced - a bit like driving on a space-saver really.

& if you see people driving on space savers you would know witha large majority of them there is no hope. Most have no idea they are restricted to 80kms/hr & also a distance of 80kms.
A bloke was fitting one ,or attempting to ,outside my house a while back it was obviously the original & had so many cracks I didn't even think the air would stay in it to get him 2kms to the garage.
Space savers should either have to be legally destroyed once used or have a self destruct in them after the distance.

Money will decide, if the manufacturers can not make a profit on the tyres they won’t make them. Simples.

The linkk includes this statement

"The baroness said tyres aged more than 10 years would be banned from the front steering axles of goods vehicles more than 3.5 tonnes, buses and coaches and also to minibuses unless the axle had twin tyres."

None of the vehicles quoted there are Category M1 (Special Purpose) which is what MHs are whether under or over 3.5t.
