We have been looking at new (used) motor homes and today saw a Hymer with two rings so close together and near the lip of the stove that I couldn’t imagine getting a normal sized saucepan or frying pan on the stove. We often cook outside especially in Europe but also like to be able to cook inside, say a two pan dish such as pasta and sauce or rice and curry. How do people manage with this type of arrangement?

I start the pasta boiling ,then lift it off and cook whatever it is on the ring, then it only takes a few minutes to reheat the pasta

Ours are small but there's only 2 of us so I use small saucepans 👍

We manage okay with 2 gas rings but when on EHU we do have a microwave as well.
Do a lot of one pan meals using the skillet which makes it easier.

You can use a double skillet (the small one) or a pressure cooker. A way to cook eg rice and curry at the same time is to put the curry in a metal 'jug; or tin which you then plonk in the middle of the pan with the rice in water around it ... don't do it the other way round otherwise you'll end up with a lot of mess! :giggle:

For rice you can use one of these which takes it off the hob complete and makes lovely fluffy rice.

I'd like to use the double width griddle I saw at Lidl but it worries me the heat would break the glass lid in the upright position, as the heat would be directed that way, up the sides.

The heat shouldn't be an issue as it's meant to take it, what it won't tolerate is a direct flame.

I've managed fine using just two of my 4 ring hob because (having the use of only one arm) when I hold down the igniter button with the thumb of my good hand my fingers can only reach the two closest ring knobs.

Take your socks off. You could learn the French Horn as well if you're musically inclined. ;)

I used to play the guitar and trumpet quite well and miss losing that ability.
Your suggestion prompted me to look on the Web and note that the French horn valves are operated with just the fingers on one hand, the left hand (which I can use). I reckon I could manage one of them and looking on the Web it seems that £150 would get a half-decent one to practice with (and ensure that I have plenty of space on French aires ;))

Ive found that the usual recipes I use are easily adapted to the double skillet - a bit of practice and it becomes second nature. It amazes me the ingredients I’m prepared to cook together with no ill effects when I’m in the van!

It was this news clip of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra I was alluding to.BSO video . About the only thing I can play is the fool.

As well as only having two rings, the position of the rings near the lip of the cooker insert means that most pots would not sit flat when centred over the gas. We’ve discounted this van for partly this reason - seems mad to spend the best part of £50k on something that can’t be used as needed. We’ll continue looking …

I guess it depends on what and how you wish to cook we have two rings couple of pans and frying pan fit on it. Most food we have we take with us prepare it at home and re-heat. This finish couple may help give you an idea on what is achievable https://m.youtube.com/c/Vantasticvan/search?query=Cooking
