With nearly 80 years public service between us, we've had enough and retired. One way Chunnel ticket bought and we're off for our first MH trip abroad. We've decided to take a west coast route, having done the other way around avoiding Paris in the car and on the Lambretta (only me, on route to Avignon).

We're looking for some suggestions please, for a nice aire somewhere two hours or so drive from Calais. Would it be too much to ask for a river view and pretty town?? It's our wedding anniversary.

Congratulations!
Le Croytoy over on the west coast or Le Hourdel on the other side of the river.
I haven't been to the former but heard good things, but have been to the latter. The motor home parking is not in the town but on the coast road after it, between Le Hourdel and Cayeux sur Mer. There are no facilities but from the beach you can watch the seals playing in the sea.
Both are on park4night.

This Aire , just south of Rouen has river views, restaurants etc nearby.

Our favourite stop up and down. Next to Eure and Seine. Lovely town, parking €5 per night but water out of service but drainage ok.
Got our Antigen tests there last week, €25.01 each, helpful and spoke perfect English.
May take more than 2 hours ?

Another vote for Honfleur, it's a beautiful historic Harbour town, and the Aire is conveniently located for the centre of town. There's also lots of wonderful restaurants for all tastes and great seafood 🦀

Here's a photo below of one part of the Aire, but it was taken in January '19, so it will obviously be busier at the moment and the charges may have increased, so it's just to give you an idea of costs.

Our favourite stop over near the ferries is Bergues just East of Dunkirk. Nothing special but there is a supermarket and bakery just up the road.
We normally walk through the town walls to eat in a nice little restaurant in the square.

Another vote for La Mailleraye-sur-Seine.
About a three hour drive from Calais and only around €6 per night.
Nice little town with a couple of excellent boulangeries for the breakfast croissants.
We hope to be there on Thursday for a few days.
Video here to help you find the way:-

I see there are a lot more posts now to stop the French driving around the barrier.

Another vote for both Bergues and Le Crotoy, very fond of Le Crotoy, and at this time of year very close to the station where le petit train will take you all across the salt marsh and into St Valery sur Somme and further on to Cayeux on certain services but not all. However assuming you want to, you can visit Berck sur Mer without going that far. Plenty of eating establishments there and it's a proper old fashioned resort, with a cracking beach where they do sand yachting, kit flying (International Kite Festival annually which is - or was! - fantastic) even with a naturist section at the dunes end of the beach (imagine a French Morfa Dyffryn) at the opposite end to the lighthouse.

Do you have the address please of where you had the Antigen tests and do you have to book in advance?

Le Touquet, without question.
I've been to most of the above places mentioned and some I would gladly return to. Others, I was disappointed with the town or the aire or both.
Le Touquet has a couple of aires - we stay in the one near the marina.
It's pricier than other aires we've stayed at in the area but the town is really lovely.
Loads of shops, cafe-bars, restaurants and very good markets (indoor and out).
Beach is decent (weather permitting)
There's a lot going on.
I may have a link below to the aire which will give you an idea or the place.
Wherever you end up, I hope you have a fantastic time!

Aire is alongside Camp Eure, up steps, up street, turn left, all of 150 yards (y)
Called in on a Tuesday, fully booked Wednesday, seen 11:40 Thursday.

Honfleur looks great, never been but now on the list

The aire is best described as "functional" just a large area of waste ground, but has water, and electric if you are lucky, but the town is about 10 minutes walk away, and is very picturesque.

As smooth as an Anthony Hopkins voiceover. Noticeable difference between the three driving modes. Power is my favourite.

An hour from the tunnel is Montreuil Sur mer.
A very well visited Aire where you can walk round the ramparts.
The Aire is not visually stunning but the town is a corker
Agree with this one - a real little French village - the restaurants are good as well
