Some help here would be appreciated.
I have ordered a Ferguson TV from the manufacturers after a telephone conversation to confirm that it would pick up French TV stations through the standard status aeriel whilst in France.
I checked again this morning and noticed was specified as HD ready and other sets sold were full HD gave them a call to ask if it was definitely OK for France the answer was no you need a satelite dish regardless of the HD type.
Does anyone know if I can use the HD ready set if I buy a set top box in France

Yes...
If you buy a set top box it will work with almost all Tv's as long as they have the HDMI socket on the back.. I would send it back and get a full HD set.. You asked and they said yes so its their error.

HD ready means the screen can handle HD but the rest of the telly cannot except via an HDMI socket
You can buy a set top HD box anywhere ( does not have to be in France )

Thank you for the prompt responses.
Sorry to be a bit dim here .So if I buy a set box in France it will work on any TV full HD set that has an HDI socket. But the set top box will not work on HD ready tv that is on the way to me.
appreciate your help.

I have spoken to the suppliers again who tell me that the HD ready TV purchased will work through a French purchased digital set top box via the status tv aeriel. But obviously will not work if the set top box is Satelite .
Can anyone confirm, They also said return TV if not wanted I just want a simple solution!

Which model of Ferguson TV have you got?

I think your even confusing me now... :D

If you buy a FULL HD TV then plug in the aerial and it's all go..

Use a HD READY TV and all it means is that it will show HD quality but needs a box either Terrestrial (aerial) with a TV Aerial or Satellite receiver connected via the HDMI socket. Obviously if you did go satellite then you need a dish as well.

MY view, reject the TV and get a full HD version then you only have 1 tv with 1 remote.
Aldi did one for £125 21" that had both full HD and also had satellite built in.

In the UK we have a mix of standard and High def signals.. France made the move some time ago and only transmit the HD High Definition signals.

We are at the moment sat in our camper van ,my wife is watching Loose Women on our 16"AVTEX tv.French tv no problem through the status and I switch to satellite and have a small portable sat dish that came as a kit from aldi £49 years ago.Its great because I can position the dish anywhere with clear view of sky.no need for set top box and dead easy to switch from digital tv to sat to DVDs.

Thank you for the reply.
The whole problem surrounds getting the system to work in France whilst on holiday.
So with the HD ready set I have ordered it will show HD (which I assume means high definition) if I have a set top digital box and if I don't connect via a box I will loose the high definition but still get a picture.
So I don't need a digital box in uk as it has freeview built in but I will not get the HD.
I assume I will have to find out if the French set top box operates through digital or satellite. Does anyone know?
I acknowledge your valid point of getting a full HD set so only one controller. I don't want to go to satellite.
I think I have got my head round HD and HD ready now thank you.

It makes me think that the Avtex has different capabilities gave ours away when we sold last van.
So the programme you wife was watching was on a French TV channel via the status and not via satellite so how are you recieving the TV signal as I understand built in freeview is UK only.
Very interesting to hear of your portable satellite aeriel I will investigate where to get one.

You will only receive French TV in France without a satellite dish and only halfway down France reliably. Any HD TV will receive French TV but in my view it's rubbish.
Do you want 12v or 220v TV?

I thought HD ready was 720p display whereas Full HD is 1080p?

In any event, I would always buy a Snart TV (LG, Sony etc etc they all do them) which then gives you proper HD quality and all the apps such as iPlayer, ITVHub , Netflix and Amazon.

The set will definitely tune into French stations when in France and anywhere else in Europe. You don't need a satellite dish

I dont wish to sound rude pelican, however you sound very confused. Are you trying to receive French tv channels in French? or English speaking channels like BBC or ITV as at home?

The solution to the latter that many people now use is an amazon firestick with extra APPs that receive tv over the internet (mobile phone data) and this plugs in any modern TVs HDMI port

Thank you for reply
The model is ferguson F24230FT2S2-12V HD ready
That's the same model we got a couple of weeks ago and haven't fully tested \ used it yet however in discussions with Cello \ Ferguson I was advised it is limited to HD Ready as a result of the panel which is 1366 x 768 format.
They also advised that it would receive terrestrial TV in France as it has DVB-S (satellite), DVB-T, DVB-T2 (terrestrial) and DVB-C tuners and can process both MPEG2 and MPEG4 compression formats. The downloadable spec confirms this.
Having said that I wasn't greatly impressed with the depth of knowledge of the "sales" contact I spoke with.
As we wanted a 24" model with inbuilt satellite tuner, and given there's not a lot of choice out there except Avtex at over twice the price, we went for this model. As we'd be using satellite I didn't really push the "accessibility" of terrestrial signal in Europe.
I checked the Ferguson next to our 65" LG 4k TV at home and if truth be told my auld eyes couldn't tell much difference so a saving of nearly £200 over the Avtex (full HD) was a key factor for us.
Tuning the Ferguson to Freeview whilst connected to our Status 530 aerial on the motorhome it pulled in and displayed all UK HD channels. Same for satellite on Astra 2.
Think your options would be -
  • assume your current TV won't work in France (and I'm not sure that would be the case) return it for replacement with a Full HD 22" model at around about the same cost.
  • as above, but return for refund and buy a different 24" model at, probable, considerable additional cost.
  • keep current TV and try it when next in France and if it definitely doesn't work (???) buy an external HD tuner locally and connect this through HDMI cable \ socket but be aware as it's only a 1366 x 768 panel the best you'll get is 1080i.
  • dump terrestrial TV and get either a fitted or portable satellite dish or go with streamed TV assuming you'll be able to get broadband access (at ongoing cost).
Hope above helps and doesn't further confuse!

Just re-read your original post again and, to confirm, my previous answer was based on you wanting to watch French HD TV whilst in France.
I think there may be some confusion within Ferguson as they may have been thinking you were wanting to receive UK Freeview channels on your Status aerial whilst in France which isn't achievable (unless you're very close to the English Channel).

To reiterate, you do not have to buy an HD box in France... You can buy it anywhere in Europe and it will work in France ( though you may be disappointed with the French programming ! )

Do you mean programmes rubbish or reception

Sorry ,should have said we are in France(Soissons)whilst my wife is watching loose women!Point is you can switch between French tv ( using status)British tv using the built in satellite receiver and a tripod mounted dish.dead easy ,I put my dish out and point it in the direction that those with automatic systems on their roofs are then listen to my earpiece for best signal ,job done in a couple of mins!

Hi Jellyneck
Need a little more help regarding the options if you would please.
The TV has now arrived (opened)

option 3 I have found a 12v digital box in garage checked it is working on an old 10 inch avtex.
Concerned might be very difficult to find 12v digibox in France. The whole point of exercise is to be able to watch tv without EHU.
Hope this is not too tedious
Does anyone know if that digital box would work in france on the new tv. are current TVs are all. HD ready

Given my confusion I've spoken, again, with Cello \ Ferguson asking the question if French terrestrial TV can be received and displayed on our model of TV. After saying "no" (picture - no \ sound - yes) they went away and checked and then said "no" (picture - yes \ sound - no) but somebody is going to check this out and give me a definitive answer tomorrow. Will let you know once I've spoken to them again.

Thank you I have spoken to a friend in france but not sure as they are all satellite.
Think I will take dog for a walk!
