Never leave a campsite with your clothes line tied to a lamp post.
We have never bothered with a TV in the van as we watch box sets / films on our laptop. However we may be spending this winter in the van while house hunting so we would like to have the option to watch TV in the evenings. We would always be on hook up so am I right that any old TV with a Freeview tuner built in will work as long as our omni antenna on the roof can get sufficient signal, as these are much cheaper than the Avtex type products with a 12V option?

I opted for a 21" Medion TV from Aldi. Does the job for us. It's both mains and 12v. It also has a satellite tuner built in so you have the option to get a cheap dish if you are in a poor signal area. Ā£130 ish. šŸ‘

I think you will also need a short soundbar. Almost all TV's now have the speakers in the rear. Fantastic sound behind the TV crap in front. Check out the TV mounting you may have to move it.

Wouldn't swap our Avtex, having said this there is another model and recall there was a post on here I think it was Jim who highlighted a discount was available on a similar product which is a lesser cost to begin with.

Medion are great...... but more than one of them has had a poor quality 12v plug - easy enough to snip off and replace with a branded one. Initially thought TV was duff as sometimes it switched on, sometimes not... just a poor connection in the plug thankfully.

Since 1964 Gosh that makes me feel old.
An omnidirectional aerial will struggle where the TV signal is poor.
We have an old one on the roof of our motorhome & direct line of sight to our local transmitter, but the bloody thing still won't pick it up.
A Status unidirectional aerial might be a good bet, especially in winter when the wind is whipping up & a stick on aerial is likely to end up in Denmark!

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

We also have a omnidirectional aerial and i think a wet bit of string would perform better.
Now use a portable sat dish which takes five minutes to set up.

I wondered if our omni aerial would be any good. Can members recommend a dish tripod combo that will work for the UK and also how they get the co-ax cable into the vehicle without drilling holes etc?

More than toes wet now!
We've used both Medion and (currently) Ferguson (same as Cello) and worked well. Having said that we've got a Status 530 directional aerial.
The Ferguson has both terrestrial and satellite tuners built in.
Can't see a link in AndyPK but this is what he's referring to.

Think I've seen a lot of satellite dish \ tripod \ etc kit for sale in Classified recently so maybe a look around there may work?

If this is for the UK, you can get a cheap & unlimited data package & a Firestick. That will give you live tv, catch up & also Netflix, Prime etc if you have it. You can get a lot of data for even a cheap second hand satellite system. If you go for the Firestick, get the 4g just because it gets a better WiFi signal & itā€™s quicker.
