Hello All
We are planning a mini 2 week tour in July ( not school holidays) and fancy a trip to the west coast of Scotland heading up to Skye with a few stops olong the way.
Question is should we put the trip off until the midge population has retreated for the season (September)? Or should we head to Northumberland and east coast of Scotland?

Its pot luck with the midges, depends on the weather. We have had Scotland rallies in June and mostly the midges haven't been too bad. If you know they are coming then get inside and close all doors.

Personally, spending a lot of time in the Highlands where we have a house, I’d go anytime from September to May. Saying that, I’ll be up for a week in July ... and it will still be lovely!

we visited 2 weeks in May last year and will do 3 / 4 weeks in may this year ..

pS; remember Scotish school holiday dates are slightly different to the rest of UK so worth checking.

Midges were far and few between this year, at least that's what we found. Northumberland is beautiful, I'm biased as it's my home county. From there you can easily move on up through East Lothian then on over to Fife.

I agree with irnbru in that it can be pot luck with the midges.
I have a small guide on my tagline at the bottom of my page, feel free to peruse at your leisure.

Hope you have a lovely time & please pop on a few photo's.

We once camped near Kielder in Northumberland and were driven out by what we were told were buffalo gnats. Whatever they were they were worse than midges because they were smaller and got into everything.

Scottish school holidays start at end of June through to 1st \ 2nd week in August.
Thanks for the info looks like we’ll change our plans and go to Scotland in September.
So maybe a tour of Wales in July!??

Thanks all

We generally do North \ West of Scotland in either March - April or September - October to avoid 1) school holidays (both Scottish and English) and 2) the midgies!

Lot of publicity this week about the SWC300, good chance to do it before it becomes swamped like the NC500.
