I have booked a site in Berwick for a week in may.Was thinking maybe I should have just booked 4 nights & stayed in different places on way.Has anyone done a road trip to Northumberland? We are in Chester. All the places of interest Seem within driving distance.Hoping parking for motorhome 🤞

Berwick upon Tweed is a nice place to visit. Great coastline and if you are even a little bit interested in art you can follow the LS Lowry trail, we found it interesting. HERE is a link to its website.

Anywhere along that Northumberland coastline is well worth a visit if you can get out and about in your van from Holy Island, Bamburgh Castle, Craster & Alnwick right down to Newcastle we found to be great and much overlooked.

If your into eating seafood I think there is quite a renowned shack on the beach at Tynemouth called RILEYS, never been myself but a good friend made a special tour just to eat there. Probably had to book.

We absolutely loved a visit to the historic NT house CRAGSIDE and would love to revisit to explore the house again and the gardens which we missed last time for lack of time between campsites on our way south after touring Scotland one autum. So you can definitely get an 8m MH parked there for sure.

Enjoy it

Lindisfarne is also worth a visit.,you just need to check the tide time tables ,but it's a very interesting island. (y)
If your on the haven site at Haggeston ,you can catch the bus to Berwick and also Bamburgh.

You could also visit Beamish Museum, campsite almost on doorstep. You will be bored with Berwick after a few days.

Berwick is lovely but you might be better moving about a bit. There are beaches galore to walk. The border towns are lovely too, Kelso is great.
Lovely spots all the way up / down the coast.

Totally agree about that coast.

Holy island is a must, Lindisfarne Abbey(ruin but aesthetic). Check tides for causeway.

Craster for huge crab sandwiches at pub on quay and fish market behind.

Farne Islands - take a hat, Artic terns peck.

If you want to drive into Berwick there is a CP alongside the CO-OP where you can park a MH at top end with overhang reversed over the grass.

Something to take note of for visiting North Northumberland ... The Public Car Parks are generally free but you need a Parking Disc in order to show your arrival time. Discs are (or were last time I got one) £1 from the ticket machines. The Car Park attendants can also be quite zealous when it comes to parking outside of the marked bay and will give a ticket so park prettily!

I maybe wrong but Bamburgh Castle carpark allowing overnighting now, certainly big enough for Motorhomes

They have dedicated "Motorhome Only" parking spaces, but last time I was there it was no overnighting.

  • Take a boat trip to the Farne Islands, see puffins and seals galore.
  • Walk across the causeway to Lindisfarne (Holy island) You won't be disappointed.
  • Visit Bamburgh Castle, go in, don't just take photos from outside even though it's an unforgettable vista.
  • Go to Craster and eat Fresh local crab sandwiches in the pub, then walk from there to Dunstanburgh Castle for the most evocative experience.
  • Don't spend too long in Berwick, it's a nice walk from the Spittal campsite to Berwick, but Berwick itself isn't the best destination.
  • Ask yourself afterwards why you only booked a week.

From the Wirral, we go up the M6 - it's scenic after Preston - to Carlisle and then on to the A7 which has a few lay-bys. Our son does this route every week to Edinburgh in a 7m van plus trailer. At Hawick we leave the A7 for the A698 to Kelso, Coldstream, and Berwick. There is major road works on the M6 up to the M58 junction but I don't remember where they start. Traffic seems to flow in offpeak times.

Last time we went to Berwick was 2018. We found the town kept us interested for 2 sunny days. Alnwick Gardens is one place we didn't miss. Any where else, take your pick; you won't be disappointed. Seeking the source of the River Tweed is a 97 mile hunt through varied countryside. You can get a train to Edinburgh but the price will have gone up since 2018!

We have been twice to Northumberland 2nd time in March this year. I think you are better to tour round a bit, some of the highlights for us were (in no particular order)

Alnwick Castle- would also visit Gardens as they have biggest collection of cherry blossom trees that are due in bloom.

Holy Island
Old Hartley
Tynemouth
Whitley Bay
Berwick
Kielder water
Bamburgh Castle
Budle Bay

I read that Bamburgh, Beadle and Amble are trialling overnight parking for motorhomes which had been approved, the signs may not be up yet.
