Hi All,

Having to phone around for travel insurance as the NFU will not cover me for anything to do with my heart following a valve replacement last year.

I have been given 2 quotes from All Clear and Stay Sure for the same cover (up to 100 days, 2 people, 12 month, Europe etc).

Stay Sure have come out over £100 cheaper ...... Can anyone provide any reasons why I shouldn't go with Stay Sure??

Stay Sure £182, All Clear £291

Just check small print ref having to book return trips. We always just to book single ferry crossings. One year went with staysure and only later did I find that a return must be booked. Luckily no issues on the trips made but could have given them a good get out clause.

I am with Admiral at present. Had by pass in 2015 and they cover me. £120 annual world travel exclude USA and Canada.

That sounds cheap, is that after you have gone through the screening process?
The last time I had a quote from Staysure for Europe whoever I was talking to was adamant that it was travel insurance not medical insurance and that it was based upon us using the EHIC for all medical problems.

Tonka,

Thanks for that. £120 sounds a great price. Will check Admiral tomorrow.

Mikeco,

Nothing was said on my phone call but we did go through the screening process. I will check when they call back re the use of the EHIC. Always worth checking.......... Thanks for the heads up.

Caution relying on your EHIC card.
After my wife broke her wrist 3 years ago they wouldn't accept the card.
Having my heart attack in France they also refused the EHIC card but gladly accepted my health travel insurance. Small print is a wonderful thing for the insurance companies.
You have to make sure your travel insurance also covers health. It's just another catch they are good at.

Wiljoy,

I always knew insurance companies can be somewhat slippery but when they quote £x million medical cover I never thought to check they actually meant it! I'm going through this process as I did not want to rely on the EHIC for something like a heart related issue, treatment for which can soon lead to a massive bill! Daft thing is I am a much better insurance risk now having had a major check up and the only issue has been fixed and thoroughly checked. I did read on one of the review sites that someone waiting for an op on his ankle had an exclusion for heart attacks added to their policy...........

Update on my travel insurance:

Basically, I had been with the NFU (and happy with them) but due to a heart valve replacement they excluded any issues with my heart or vascular system so have had to look else where.

Cover is for me with a heart valve replacement and my wife taking blood pressure tablets.
5 star cover, 281 days in Europe, 100 days single trip, no cruises, + all the usual cover. (Europe only)

Stay Sure £ 160 (after waiting a week to receive a 15% discount offer via e-mail that appears automated so worth waiting for)

All Clear £291

Nationwide FREE with correct Current account BUT £132 extra for medical issues and extra £108 for 90 days single trip cover. (not forgetting the monthly charges less interest paid on first £2500?)

I've gone for Stay Sure as I am reluctant to change my current account. However, I was a little unsettled when they wanted to charge me £1.99 to post the policy to me! Never come across a company that charges for a policy postage before and when I questioned it with a manager he "explained" that it was due to the policy doc being 60 pages long - I could have had it e-mailed for free! 60 pages - how many exclusion might this doc contain/hide?

Anyone else out there come across either charging for a policy doc to be sent or a travel policy being 60 pages long? My NFU doc for house, contents, outbuildings, 2 cars, travel cover and a MoHo where only about 12 pages last year.

Would be interested to know if the policy states that you have to use your EHIC card for treatment.

I used staysure and insurancewith for a few years but it’s hard to review if you don’t claim! I would use both again . I seem to remember that you have to use the ehic card if possible in Europe and enrol in Medicare for Australia.

That is what my brother said on a friday night , 3 weeks after his yearly ecg on treadmill & all passed with flying colours."fitter than a butcher's dog" Dead on sunday morning from a massive heart attack.

We use Staysure, have done for a couple of years when it was the only company who would cover us for Morocco and longer trips for what I would call reasonable money. Fortunately we're both healthy so no problems there, but having just turned 70 we'll have to see what happens at renewal time. Have just had a quick look at the policy document which, with some additional necessary info, is indeed 60 pages long so I got it emailed and printed it out myself.

They do request you to get an EHIC card and if you use it they say they will not charge the usual excess. But importantly they emphasize that you must contact them immediately if you need medical assistance or there is any likelihood of a claim. I can confirm for Australia they request you register with Medicare. Fingers crossed, have never needed them so don't have any experience of a claim or assistance. They do state that this is Travel Insurance and not Medical Insurance, the difference apparently being that they only cover emergencies that occur outside the UK until you are able to return, either under your own steam or with their help.

I'm sure I was told that we had to book a return ticket within the trip length limitation (100 days in our case, we paid extra) although just flicking through the documents I can't actually see it anywhere. We do anyway as we use the Tunnel and Tesco vouchers, which is simple to change if necessary.

Hi All,

Interesting about the EHIC. Following a warning posted earlier, I specifically asked the question about the EHIC and whether I needed to use it. The recorded response was "No you do not need to use the EHIC as this is full medical cover insurance" they even stated that I did not even need an EHIC!!!! (I do have one and will be taking it) It will be interesting to see what is in the 60 pages T&Cs when I get them. Without wishing to restart any B***** debates, given that it is stated Gov policy to leave the EU, I can not see any way the insurance companies could rely on an EHIC to provide cover for a policy that will run past even a delayed exit date (or maybe not but they can not surely rely on an extended delay/no exit)

Gus_lopez Sorry to hear about your brother - you are absolutely correct, a full medical "MOT" does not guarantee anything, but I still believe that following a comprehensive medical check-up you should be less likely to have a problem than someone of a similar age that has no idea of the state of their heart/health.

Obviously check with each insurer as you get several ansers but I was told that the ehic card should be presented when treatment was requested abroad as “it keeps costs down “

Having problems with stay sure at the moment, small print states you must inform them of any changes having done so they immediately removed all cardiac cover which they say is covered in their small print to do this meant I had to cancel a cruise due to no insurance now in a battle with stay sure to pay the lost deposit as its their with drawl of cover that necessitated the cancellation and what good is paying for a yearly policy if the company can withdraw cover when you become ill with a problem youve payed a small fortune to be covered for:mad:

Romany. Thanks for this heads-up. How they can claim to be the UKs No1 for customer trust I have no idea.

Still waiting for the policy doc to come via post as I always prefer to read a paper doc when reviewing but I will be sure to check for this excursion clause!! When I had cover with the NFU, I informed them of the heart valve replacement part way through the policy and they honoured it until renewal when they removed cover for heart related issues. This is in my view a fair way to do business unlike what Stay Sure have done to you!

I almost did not go ahead with the policy when they told me it was a 60 page document - my gut told me that contained some where within the 60 pages would be multiple get-out-of-jail clauses that would all be to their benefit.

Anyone else got any travel cover issues that may have been in the small print be seem to be somewhat unjust even if technicality legal.

Has anyone else been issued with such a large policy document (60 pages) from any other company or is it just Stay Sure?

Wish this had come up when I googled staysure reviews before I parted with my money Thanks for the link Clansman (y)

That's truly awful, terrible shock for the family.

Thanks Clanjones.

Only read the first page of the complains and that was enough for me. We all pay for our insurance on an assumption that we will receive benefit from the policy should we need it. A 60 page policy document (which has still not arrived) and the number of hugely problematic (!) claims complaints is more than enough for me to cancel my policy and start looking again..... It now remains to be seen how simple it is to cancel and have my monies repaid?

I will update the forum as and when.

Now, any suggestions who I might try next?

My requirements:
Cover for me with a heart valve replacement and my wife taking blood pressure tablets.
5 star cover, >140 days in Europe, 90/100 days single trip, no cruises, + all the usual cover. (Europe only)

Have used Staysure for several years to visit daughter in Oz and had to claim for the first time this year. Fractured patella in Melbourne . Rang helpline from hospital for all clear to go ahead and asked for confirmation by e mail . On cruise had to see on board doctor for flu and received tamiflu and my wife also and other medication . In all over 609A$ for cruise bill and 1600A$ for fracture . Both paid out quickly minus the excess.

Good to hear some positive feedback - it is helpful for any readers of this thread who may be with Stay Sure. I unfortunately have lost to much confidence to stay with them.
