Hi Bill

I'll be far too busy until Saturday early afternoon , so please remind me of your query at that moment, and I will give a call to the French tolls and will be able to give you the exact price for your motorhome.

Amicalement

Frankie:)

frankie thank you very much there is no rush hun we don't leave till end of december don't tell jj but next time i see u i will give ya a big kiss xx:whistle:

According to all the info I can glean the toll SHOULD be about €11.00, but it seems a fair few others, like me, copped for a mmassive and unexpected toll.
I can only put it down to vehicle size and weight ( 7 metres long, 3.1 metres high, 4.1 tonnes in my case )

What are the dimensions of your MH Bill ?

7x3x3 john and only 3.4ton

I can only add to the confusion, as previously quoted on other threads, we went through in October the new peage has 2 toll sections, at each we were asked for 15.63 euros, I think the amount is correct, it was a peculiar figure, when queried by use o the intercom both dropped to 5.30 (or 5.70) cant remember exactly, then there is the original section, which came off half way along and rejoined after an overnight, but we paid over 20 euros just that bit, plus more in Spain

We came back over the mountains and will be going over the top in future, much more scenic, not much good if you are heading for the north of Spain or Portugal though I guess

Well you SHOULD be OK Bill, but given all the confusion if you can find another way I think I would take that instead !

i think i may look at another route its becoming harder and harder to get down that way without tolls will keep u informed of any routes i may find

There are two new toll booths and the toll is payable at both. As with all tolls in France size is everything. More than 3m high or 3.5t gross or 3 axles then you come under the 'Poids Louds' and the toll depends on the Euro rating of the engine.

Apparently the first toll booth travelling south can be avoided by a short detour. €10.60 each way for class 2, around €30 for class 3.

so how are they avoided ?

It was mentioned in a previous thread on this subject, leave at junction 18 and rejoin by 17, if you look at the map it is not too far out of the way. I don't think the southernmost toll at Castets can be avoided.

john, think you're over 8 metres long :-)

Update:- As you may have seen from my contributions to other posting on tolls, the Castets toll is easily avoided incurring only a little delay. The diversion route is valid for anything under 7.5 tons.

Hi Bill,
Came up that way early April this year in A class Hymer 644,4ton and 7mts,both tolls cost 5.30euros.

Hmmmm! It seems that the motorways are best avoided altogether.

Sorry but this is a old thread,

Depends what class your vehicle is in.Class two. Unless over three meters high, then you might be class three.

Note the price and class on the display. If it is classe 3, press the help button and attempt "je suis un camping car anglais, moins de trois metres'

Both the Muret and the Castets tolls can be avoided by using the service road which runs alongside the motorway, if you are under 7.5 tons. See other "A63 toll" postings for the detailed route instructions/maps.

Latest info from about France.com.
South of Bordeaux, follow the A63 toll motorway as far as the the Spanish border. The cost (April 2017 ) is 14.90€ for a car, about 50% more for a car plus caravan; but this will save about an hour in normal traffic conditions. The last 50 km of this toll motorway, southwest of Magescq (exit 11) , are particularly recommended, as the Bayonne area is built-up and busy. The A63 links directly at the border to Spain's Autopista A-8, and thereafter to the Spanish motorway network..
Note however that this motorway is not pay-on-exit; it is pay-at-toll-points, of which there are four. The two most northerly of these can be avoided by leaving the motorway between exits 18 and 17, and again between exits 12 and 11. Time lost: about a quarter of an hour. Tolls saved: 3.50 Euros saved twice (more than that if you have a camper van). This is not recommended for trucks, as they have to follow a longer alternative route.
To avoid tolls (southbound) :
Leave A63 at exit 18 "Le Muret". Turn south on D834 to Castelnau. Here turn right onto D410, then D10E which runs along the eastern side of the motorway. Rejoin motorway at Liposthey (exit 17).
At exit 12, follow D947 for 1 km towards Castets. Then left onto D378. When this starts running along the western side of the motorway, fork left onto D10E. Rejoin the motorway at Magesq (exit 11).

We more or less done this on the way down but exited at Jct 12 and rejoined at Jct 6 and paid the last few tolls to the Spanish border. We reverse the route when returning. Our total toll fare for the A63 in Feb this year was €.2.8, 3.5 & 2.6 Total €.8.9. We are a 3.5 T class 2 motorhome.
