Has anyone used the toll roads in Portugal?
The payment method sounds like a nightmare. Apparently some of them you can pay by cash others you need to link your credit card to your licence plate!

You can pay the electronic tolls with a prepaid subscription. ( Toll card)
You can prepay €5 €10 €20 or €40. Search online for Portugal tolls (www.portugaltolls.com) click on Foreign vehicles scroll down to Tollcards and at the bottom of that section click Buy now. Choose ‘What card should I buy’ and you will see the options. It’s pretty straight forward to fill in your details. You pay online and your in the system. You can check your balance online and see the charges.
non electronic tolls you pay as normal.

Thanks Allan I’ll give that a go.

When entering Portugal there are toll booths where you register your debit card and they record your reg number, they debit your card when ever you enter/leave a toll road, the down side is this only lasts for 30 days, we entered on the A49/A22 from Saville

Toll system is complex compared to other countries and it’s easy to stray onto a toll section without realising.
There are basically 2 options for visiting Brits.
1) ‘EASYtoll is the most convenient, but only available at 4 entry points on major entry points into Portugal. Stop at one of these locations, sign-up with your credit card and you’re ready to go. This will get you through all the electronic toll points, but some are not electronic so you’ll have to stop and pay.
2) Toll Card can be purchased and operated online, (can also be purchased in post offices etc) but you’ll have to load it with cash before you use it. Problem is you don’t know how much the tolls will be (some sections are expensive) so you need to check your balance very regularly while on the move to avoid a fine. You can request a refund of any remaining balance.
Avoid the ‘Via Verde’ lane. It will let you through, but you’ll get a fine for using it.

There are only 3 points of entry into Portugal where you can register with a Credit card also the cc registration only lasts 30 days then you have re-register.
As Allanm says its easy to register online for a virtual toll card. If you go on an electronic toll road as long as you register the same day it will be OK but if you forget just ring them and they will back date it.
Be aware it takes 5 or 6 days for the balance to be updated.
We also found when we came out of Portugal our balance didn't reduce for the days usage, when we went back in a year later th. E balance reduced. Last October we had €1.50 balance and we knew we were going to use €5 or €6 so topped up, balance is still on the card so it wasn't a one off.

Thanks for all the advise.
I think the best option for us is to pay for a 40 Euro toll card online. We're in Northern Spain now and we were going to travel south down the coast of Portugal over the next couple of weeks and on to Gibraltar. Can anyone give an educated guess of how much we can expect in tolls to do the length of Portugal?

€40 you rich? I just put 5 or 10 on as needed. Go onto their website there is a calulator you enter the junction you enter and exit. There is also maps with prices marked on the sections but that's not that clear to understand.

Haha, just thought it might take a bit of the hassle out of it! thanks again for the help I'll check the website

I followed a similar route from northern Spain down the Portuguese coast to Oporto & Lisbon and then on to the Algarve via Evora, onwards to Seville and Gibraltar. From memory you’ll need all of that €40, I recall paying nearly €30 for one expensive non-electronic section.

We only dip onto the motorways occasionally use the ordinary roads a lot of the time, they have improved a lot over the last few years.

That helps, thank you.
Think we'll try and get in a few non toll roads as well. We've never been this way before I'm hoping its worth the expense and hassle! The only the other option is to go down the border on Spains side but I don't think that will be as interesting as the coast.

I generally do that too, but in northern Portugal I found it really tedious. The roads were busy, very slow passing through built up areas and constantly being taken on & off the motorway sections to avoid toll sections. I accumulated most of my toll charges prior to Lisbon.

If you like forts & fortified downs loads down the Portuguese side of the border probably similar in Spain but not done that side.

Sorry I don't know what the blip and go is.
I think I'm right in saying most of Portugals toll roads don't have toll booths, a over head gantry records your reg number when entering and leaving the toll road.
When registering your debit card it's not really a toll booth, when entering the country there's a notice advising you to enter a area where your card and reg. number is recorded.
You may have one of the other methods of paying mentioned in other posts.

Thanks Top Hat the bip and go is just the name of the tag gadget that sits in the windscreen and in France and Spain and deducts the the toll fee from your bank account , it’s supposed to work in Portugal as well but I am not so sure.

I have the big & go for Spain and Portugal. To use it in Portugal you have link it to your reg. no. You can do it here in the UK before you go, on their website

Excellent ,will do that now . I am I right in thinking when I have done this I have no need to register any thing when I enter Portugal ?

Although we have been visiting Portugal for many years, we have never felt the need to use the toll roads, ? and unless we get caught out probably never will. ?
But this might be of interest to those that do, ? they have made a reduction. ? Bob.

I have Via Verde transponder linked to a Portuguese bank account, on the electronic toll roads the overhead gantries sense the transponder and give an audible beep.

On the non electronic toll roads with booths they have a 'Via Verde' lane which senses the transponder without stopping and ultimately collects the toll.

I would assume that your bip and go device will work in the same way if set up for Portugal and no further registration would be necessary.

I don't believe you have to do anything else. Although we never ventured into Portugal, only Spain.

Thanks matamoros , we will find out on Saturday ?

The toll card is a totally screwed up affair as the the balance (which you need to check online) typically updates 48 hours in arrears which means you never know whether you're in credit or are about to get a fine for using the toll road with an expired card. Quite how they managed to create such a complicated and in many respects useless system is beyond me. All said, Portugal is great.
