Started getting “oil pressure insufficient, stop engine etc”. This happens when I stop e.g.at Stop sign(!), but if I keep going everything still sounds OK. Advice please. Fiat Ducato 2013 2.3 150 bhp.

Can anyone tell me how you get synthetic oil, what's it made of if it isn't oil?
It’s made by squeezing tree huggers and ‘just stop oil’ protesters. If you need to blend it you can add small amounts of ‘get off my land’ers to ensure it has the right amount of acid.
+1 check oil
If thats ok you real shouldn't be driving till it's been checked.
You shouldn't be driving if the oil is low ether

If its only when on tickover that's completely different than if running.
Tickover could be low oil...intermittent sensor or other spurious things from the ECU.
And if it is a serious engine problem then youd expect it to do it only on tickover but also to be doing it on full revs if it was serious.

When was the engine oil and filter last changed. Clogging or sludging could result in a small delay in reporting the right pressure.

You can't really reply to this without seeming to be being clever but have you checked the dipstick, you haven't said, if you have and it's full then it needs serious looking at.
Otherwise it needs some oil in.

What grade oil have you got in , this was a problem in Australia years ago when manufacturers started down the "thin" oils path driven by emissions chasing . Low pressure warning when hot on idle . Another possibility will be sensor fault , hook up to diagnostics to get live readings at various rpm

Check the oil level and top up with 5w/30 fully synthetic oil. (STRIKE FULLY SYNTHETIC, IT SHOULD BE SEMI SYNTHETIC according to Lenny HB, who knows much better than me!) The range between max & min on the dipstick is approximately ONE LITRE. D O. N O T O V E R F I L L. I T !!! See attached photo from manual. For those interested see link to manual for an X250 series Ducato. https://aftersales.fiat.com/elumdat...77_250_ducato_603.99.321_en_01_05.13_l_e5.pdf

Cheers! Russ

Thank you all. Haven’t yet checked the level, but it was the first thing on my list - after getting your advice in case it is serious. We are 50 miles from home, and I have a dental appt on Monday for the filling that fell out yesterday!

Be very careful, we got this warning on our last trip and motorhome is currently sitting in the garage waiting for a new engine (thread over in the Fiat base vehicle area) . Although to be fair it sound like the damage was done before the warning came up in our case and likely nothing we could have done to prevent it.

Don't folks check the dipstick anymore?
How can you post about a oil warning light without it being the first thing you would do.
It used to be an at least weekly occurrence, never mind waiting for lights.
And in fact I still do , every day on a long trip.

Agreed, but I've been doing it less frequently with my ten year old Skoda Fabia as I've found that I never need to top up any of the oils between annual services, only w/screen washer fluid.
A pal with a new'ish Merc says that it doesn't have a dipstick and also said that there's not even provision for an owner to open the bonnet.................

Couldn’t get semi synthetic when I was looking for oil for a service for my 2.2puma engined possl 2 win!!!!
Halfords don’t stock it either (semi synthetic) so I ordered the ford spec 5W30 fully synthetic on line 20liters for £60 👍😁

Maybe needs a longer dipstick 😁

Mmmm if the level is good then you may have contaminated oil (diesel lowering it's viscosity possibly) but if that is OK then a good chance that the oil pump is worn or a significant bearing(s) is worn and not holding back the oil sufficiently at low flow to create pressure ..... back in the nineties I had to do some work at the MIRA place near Coventry...one of the super techie bods there was telling me that by the time you see the lamp then the damage is done......not destruction but damage......moral of the story....look after you oil....!

In my early RAF days of driver training, it was P.O.W.E.R.

Petrol (fuel)
Oil
Water
Electrics
Rubber.

I once opened up the front grill of a DAF Tractor Unit searching for the oil dipstick, only to be told by a young whippersnapper full time driver that there wasn't one, ie, all the checks were done by the onboard digital dash display. :whatthe: ....... 🤷‍♂️
I was more familiar with Scanias and Volvos myself. ;)

Cheers,

Jock. :)
