One question re Spains changing to flashing lights as opposed to Warning triangles? How to place them on a non metallic surface. Couple of bits of ply and some Velcro?

I’ll use my hazard lights 😀👍

Whilst it's not compulsory for a few years and you can't get the radio beacon light yet
basically hazard lights are not enough for the new regulations and once live fully there will be no excuse of being a foreigner or "I didn't know"

Yes yet another piece of kit for one specific country I know but we have a bit of time to let Spain decide whether to repeal the direction

i thought it came in for use from 1 july 2021,

the other point i have noted it switches on automatically when placed on metal,,,,, so can it be switched on manually i wonder.

For some reason only know to Spain they are going to be mandatory. The reason for replacing the Triangle is a number of people get killed every year when placing the Triangles. The idea of these is you can just open the window and place them on the roof. That in itself can be a problem if no metallic surface available. Their argument is if you had a breakdown that for what ever reason you could not have your hazard lights operating these are independently powered.

They have a small button on the back, first press flashing orange light, press again fixed white light, press again off. Uses a PP9 battery.

How do I post a short video please?
Save the file somewhere easy to access then just use the attach files button at bottom left of the box you type in.

Would it work if you just stuck a metal plate onto your bodywork??

I plan to attach it to the tow bar.

I was under the impression that ones in Spain when activated automatically alert the emergency services about you and exactly where you are.

I think you do that via downloaded app the app tells them your location when you activate the breakdown request on the app itself.

Hiya just had a look on line RAC etc and still quoting 2 triangles,
heading to spain1st. March for 6 weeks, when does this come in?

Not that soon. 👍

i believe this is it

QUOTE!!
Twenty people lost their lives in Spain while placing their emergency triangles on the road in 2020. As of July 1st 2021, the V-16 emergency light is supported by Spain's Traffic Code, although it won't be obligatory for drivers to have one in their vehicles until January 1st 2026.

The triangles were always a bit of a stupid idea. Last thing you want to do after a breakdown is wander around behind your vehicle.

V16 emergency beacon light being placed on top of car

Warning Triangles In Spain To Be Replaced By V16 Emergency Beacons By 2026 Expat Tips
Spain's DGT Traffic Authority has set out plans to introduce tougher sanctions for drivers, which are expected to come into effect by the end of 2021.
One of the main changes will be the replacement of the emergency triangles, which are being replaced by V16 emergency lights, also referred to as ‘beacons’.
The new beacons will be authorised from July 1, 2021, and will gradually phase out the traditional emergency triangle between then and January 1, 2026. The reason for the change is that, according to data from the DGT (not including the Basque Country and Catalonia), 28 people were killed on Spain’s roads after leaving their vehicle, between the years 2019 and 2020.
Furthermore, in the month of January 2021, a further 4 people also lost their lives under the same circumstances.
Below we answer a few of the important questions most commonly asked about the V16 emergency beacons.
How do the emergency beacons work?
The emergency beacon has a yellow/orange, 60-degree, flashing light that will have a parabolic reflector allowing visibility from approximately one kilometre away. It also has geolocation features built-in and Bluetooth technology, which will allow users to connect them to a mobile so they will be able to send a request for roadside assistance when it is activated.
The light, with its magnetic base, should be placed at the highest point on the roof of your vehicle. This should be done by lowering your window and reaching out to place the light on the roof. Do not leave your car to do this. The beacon also provides a more secure method to indicate that the vehicle is in trouble on the road.
Only purchase an emergency light that is approved by the DGT. This is because it should
  • Be water-resistant
  • Should provide visibility for more than one kilometre
  • Have a special battery requirement
  • Have intensity of between 40 and 80 candelas
  • Have a viewing angle of 360 degrees
  • Have protection level IP54
The V16 beacons are currently, at the time of writing, available to buy online and in reputable stores for approximately 35-40 euros.
When will it be mandatory to use the beacon?
The use of the beacons will come into effect on July 1, 2021, you will however still be able to use the traditional warning triangle or light without geolocation until January 1, 2026. From that date on, the only form of warning device you are allowed to use is the V16 Beacon that has built-in geolocation.
How do you find me?
The V16 emergency lights incorporate a geolocation system that, when activated, sends a signal out to the DGT 3.0 cloud every 100 seconds, notifying them of your vehicle's location.
Operators can then make adjustments to electronic motorway signs to indicate to other drivers that a vehicle has broken down and maybe in a vulnerable position.
Why has it changed?
The V16 signal (its official name according to the General Vehicle Regulations) modifications are included in the Royal decree that controls emergency services on public roads. General Deputy Director of Mobility Management, Jorge Ordas, explained that the emergency triangles are being removed due to the elevated number of fatal accidents that have transpired from drivers leaving their vehicles to place or collect the triangles after suffering from an incident on the roads.
What if I need to get out of my vehicle?
According to the new regulations “as a general rule” you should only leave your vehicle if there is a safe place off of the road for you to go to. This should also be on the opposite side of the flow of the traffic.
If you can not safely leave your vehicle, you should remain in your seat with the seat belt fastened securely, until assistance arrives.
You can find out more about the V16 emergency beacons via the official DGT page.

Could add a suction pad at the end instead of Velcro

I doubt many of us realise this rule but it seems logical given Spain’s strict laws on road use, as above. This is my understanding but I do stand to be corrected. 😜

You cannot tow a car on Spanish roads behind another vehicle unless you are a vehicle breakdown recovery agent, hence A frames being illegal.

You have to wear a fluorescent/yellow vest accessible from inside the vehicle at all times when outside broken down and you must have one for every person in the vehicle.

I think most on here know both the above but are you aware that you cannot stop on a road to assist another vehicle that is broken down, unless you are the said recovery agent. So you cannot help a friend. You would be fined.

I am carrying a couple of these self-adhesive metal plates for use with my V16 beacon. Originally for connecting phones to in car magnetic mounts.

These lights are a cracking idea, much easier to see in both daylight and at night...I carry one in each vehicle and will be happy to apply it without putting myself in danger putting out a triangle......Another forward thinking idea for Spain to help make motoring safer...

I totally agree, its a brilliant idea - something that clearly says that there is a problem and can't be confused with direction indicators, which is the problem with using hazard lights.

The problem many of us have got is that our vehicles are not magnetic however we definitely want to do as much as possible to avert any collisions. I ve known about this for a few months now and been wondering how to fix some discrete strobes to the top rear of ours switchable from inside, there are plenty available because they re widely used for plant.

I imagine the GPS location element is because its likely that the Spanish road people probably get a lot of calls from foreigners who are unable to give them very much information. OK my version won't have that but if I also got a regular one that I could stick in the nearest south facing window then that should deal with it.

As the majority of vehicles currently in use on Spanish roads are made from a material that the magnetic light base will fix too.
As previously shown in the video posted by Don Quixote its intended method of use is to put an arm through the window an fix to the roof....not all vehicles can provide this simplistic method...but the majority can..👍🇪🇦

Just put it on the barrier behind to the van or on the road.
The idea is you do not leave the vehicle.

The call service for emergency services is available in most languages. Same as 112 is.
As an aside allyou need for them is the name/number of the road and the km markers. On autovias it is in tenths .I.e km 456.7
