We had a SOG in our old van and on the whole were very happy with it and intended to put one in the new van (y) Our new van, however, came with a Thetford fan system so we decided to live with it for a while to see how it worked.

Long story short - its not as effective!

Does anyone know how the Thetford works? Where does it vent to? More importantly, does anyone know if you can put a SOG on to a toilet that already has a Thetford fan?

I fitted the Thetford loo fan system to our loo and we have found it to be very good.
It vents through the floor under the loo.

Is your van brand new or new to you. If it's new to you have you checked or replaced the charcoal filter ?

We have also got the Thetford version on our current motorhome and have found it to be just as good as the SOGs we've had in the past.
Ours vents out under the floor, but they can be vented through a wall or the roof.

Its a brand new van and we fitted the charcoal filter before first use. Its a factory fit and operated independently by a fan button on the flush panel.

Likewise our Motorhome came with the thetford C250 in built fan, it works but decided it could do with more airflow,
so I put another larger fan downstream of the first that actually switches on as you walk into the toilet curtesy of a PIR timer that also doubles as a light switch for the floor lighting,
All very simple to do and have no complaints with its performance,
Ours vents beneath the floor so quite a long pipe run, if you are venting to the side then the normal thetford fan should be adequate,
If it’s charcoal filter is old then that will reduce airflow,
Tip ... if you get some charcoal blocks from a aquarium shop you can cut them to fit for a fraction of the costs that thetford want to charge,

since 2007, 25 years tuggin before that.
I found the fan was fitted upside down on ours so it was blowing instead of sucking.
Turned the fan over & all's well.

Thanks all!

Two on Tour - vent checked and other half says its a neat job! (y)

DP_JAY - will have a close look at the fan later!

ivorantony - sounds fabulous - can you come and remodel our bathroom?? Joking aside, the second fan sounds interesting and could be useful for 'bigger jobs' where the Thetford fan seems to struggle :tmi:

We have downsized to a PVC - Hymercar and the bathroom is 'compact and bijou' and right in the middle of the van. Its difficult to know if some of the problems are more noticeable as we are just closer to the action! I am very reluctant to resort to chemicals of any description after 10 years of SOG use so we WILL find a solution!!

We ordered a SOG on our BDL Hymer, when the van came it had with it the bits for the Thetford filter. They weren't fitted but the fan was wired in I disconnect the fan as it wasn't doing anything.
The SOG is the underfloor version it works much better than the door vented ones. I refill the filter myself costs about £3 compared to £24 for a new one.
