I’m thinking of fitting a Thetford extractor fan to our Frankia and wondering if it’s necessary to remove the complete toilet and cut the large hole for the vent pipe.
I can’t see why it’s such a large funnel type thing.
Could I use a smaller pipe with a small flange and just fit that into the fan enclosure?

I followed the instructions and removed the whole loo, but if you are happy to work with your head stuffed in the space for the cassette, then give it a go and let us know if it is doable. (y)

P.S. Mandy, photos of Nick at work please, I could do with a good laugh. :giggle:

Just bought a spare fan for ours if you don't want to buy the kit.

What’s the diameter of the pipe after the large funnel part and why such a large funnel part?

Just been crawling under the van specially for you Nick.

Outer is 38.5mm and 34.5mm internal.
I'm pretty sure that the funnel section is there to divert the air from the fan into the smaller diameter pipe section to stop the air spread from the fan bouncing off the floor below the fan, making it more efficient.

Maybe if you extended the pipe up until it was touching the fan case, this would eliminate the need for the funnel section ?
Thank you for crawling around on the floor for me.
That’s what I was thinking, maybe 40mm O/D pipe with a thin flange directly under the fan.

You were robbed Dave, I bought a couple from Aliexpress.
Mind you, the MH spares people charge nearer £40 each.

Are these the same flow rate as the Thetford version.
Thinking of buying that and a original filter and use a micro switch like the SOG ones use.

Yes exact same fan

Yes, as Dave says, exact same fan, 12,000 rpm and 14 CFM flow rate. (y)
Use the original filter for the first instance as it obviously fits correctly, but going forwards, when you need to replace it, just open the filter casing up and replace the activated charcoal.
Rather than mucking about with a micro switch, why not just use an on/off switch with a time delay relay in the circuit to keep the fan running for a period after you close the blade to evacuate the pong ?

I put an axial computer fan in the roof light, works very well. Also put a night light in it.

For the extra amount it costs I'd go for a SOG, having had both SOG and genuine Thetford ones I found the Thetford to be very noisy and less efficient than the SOG.

I just use these cut to size to reload the original filter.

SOG sounds easier to install too.

150 quid for a SOG as a posed to 30 quid for parts for a home brew.

I think just micro switch, SOG always worked ok and don’t see the point in fan running on but I suppose there must be a reason ok thetford wouldn’t both

I have used some 1mm foam tape around the edges of the fan to insulate it from plastic on plastic makes a great difference to the noise of the fan.

Does the Thetford fan have a seal above and below or just sealing onto the filter?

I fitted a new higher output fan, was 20mm instead of 15mm, but it's pretty quiet, can hardly hear it inside, I removed the expensive charcoal filter box and now use charcoal foam similar to the SOG.
The fan is so powerful it sucks your bum to the seat, cost about £9

So do you not have to strain as much now 😯 😄

I fitted the thetford option on my last van, had to take the entire toilet out and change the control panel. Would never have it again, current van has SOG and it is far better, quieter and good air flow. The thetford was so noisy I fitted some in-line resistors to slow it down, not ideal. I can't overstate how noisy it was! The aromas leaving the bottom of the van are no better either since it all depends on wind direction.

Well that’s my hybrid Thetford vent fitted.
Thetford filter, AliExpress fan and micro switch and a aluminium tube with flared end.
Fitted it without removing the whole toilet.
Time will tell how it works

My home brewed version of the SOG was needed because my C263 rotates so a normal SOG wouldn’t work, pipework/ fan and housing/ and outlet with a PIR to switch it when toilet door is open
Came to about £70, and works a treat, you can feel the air flowing past your nether regions when sitting down,
