I know how much you all like to talk "crap" about our toilets, so at the risk of generating lots of sh*tty jokes taking the p*ss out of my question, here goes.
Like most on here I have a "C" series Thetford toilet without its own flush tank. Carthago install a SOG system venting through the roof of the van. In the bottom of the cassette housing is the space where the filter would be fitted if Thetford's own ventilation system was used. This filter housing has a plastic cover to secure the filter in the housing and this cover has a small round raised section with a soft rubber "seal" on it. My question is, should this cover plate be fitted regardless of whether or not a Thetford venting system is fitted? (Does it serve any other purpose)
Hope that makes sense. Let the games begin:giggle::giggle:(y)

Hi Lazyboy.
It took me a while to notice, but our Carthago never had the charcoal filter fitted or supplied from new. I assumed that because it had a SOG that was roof vented that it didnt need one.
There certainly isn't a cover to hold a filter in if I did purchase one, so I think I will just carry on using without filter, haven't had any problems thus far and neither have my neighbours.(y):giggle:
Hopefully someone will straighten me out on whether a filter is required or not, if one is required then either The Dealer or Carthago, owe me a filter.

Yes the cover plate is needed as without the ramp on the plate the vent in the cassette would not open and as a result, the fermenting human waste that you have deposited in the cassette will build up pressure, and when you next open the blade you will get a blast of something you really don't want.

Hi Les
Thanks for the reply. You do not need a filter as , like mine, you have a SOG roof vented. As you do not have a cover installed I assume one is not required.

I don’t have sog, but am thinking that if you do then there is a fan fitted, and it is, in your case blowing out of the roof vent. So there is no point fitting a carbon filter into the lower part of the hosing as that will now be where air enters, to then pass through the cassette.

The SOG is vented to the roof. Would that not reduce the pressure to enable the blade to open? Do you know if the "ramp" serves any other purpose e.g. To enable the cassette to be seated correctly under the "trap door"

As I said it opens a vent/valve within the cassette itself to stop pressure building up internally in the cassette.

Have a look at post #54 of the link of a recent thread on SOG's where I explain and show photos of what the ramp on the plate does.

It is not the case that I want to fit a filter in the cassette housing but does that cover need to be fitted.
You may have answered the question for me as I assume that air would be drawn in through the bottom by operation of the SOG fan i.e. Opening the flap. So it is possible that the cover needs to be fitted to seal to the bottom of the cassette to enable correct air flow. Does that sound feasible?

I don't know the in's and out's of the Carthago SOG, but I would imagine that Carthago sog just evacuates the whole of the cassette and encasement it's mounted in and ejects it at high level through the roof and therefore I would see no reason for a filter as the pong will be dispersed at roof level rather than low level as does the Thetford and in the mounted in the door SOG where the pong would linger if not filtered.

With most of the roof vented versions, there is no valve in the output hose, so pressure cannot build up. As you open the slide, it opens the switch for the fan. This draws air in through the slide opening and in effect sucks out any farts you produce when sat on the toilet and any gasses in the cassette. The fresh air drawn in helps with the aerobic digestion of any solids

To answer the question in the OP the plate in the floor is needed to help the cassette seal between the rubber blade seal and the plastic of the toilet bowl. Essential to avoid minor leaks of fluids from the bowl into the cavity where the cassette sits. Obviously made worse if you happen to be in the pee first then open the slide camp to drop it into the cassette
