My mate has just taken delivery of his van conversion with a Thetford Oven. The oven lights but goes out when the oven door is closed. I can understand the grill cutting out when the door is closed but not the oven.

Has anyone got any ideas on what the problem might be please?

Mine does it too (Dometic) if I close the door too soon after lighting. I think it relies on convection or something (someone will correct me with the correct term), but I think youre supposed to leave it with the door open for a few minutes once lit before closing the oven door? Seems to work better for me when I do that, flames still dim but dont go out completely.

Thank you very much Calm Seas. We like it when the solution is so simple.

Same here; the dreaded tech tower “oven” door has to be kept open for a few minutes until it has started to warm up. Pain in the ass

If the flame dims when the door is shut that sounds like lack of air. Flame with lack of air might = Carbon Monoxide. I would want to see something in the manual that says this is normal operation or get it checked out.

Motorhome ovens seem to be poorly designed, in order for a gas appliance to work there has to be a flow of air to burn and products to clear. On an oven this is caused by the heat taking the products up and out through the vent, which may be in the door, and air entering underneath. Due to the poor design it is too slow to build up the flow enough to clear the products. By leaving the door open a little it increases the size of the "vent" and allows the oven to heat up and establish the flow.

That makes total sense (y)

My oven still doesn't work. Grill fine. But almost every time the door closes the oven extinguishes itself. So frustrating.

The light on our fridge goes out when we close the fridge door, it's a Thetford fridge freezer, perhaps it's a manufacturing issue?

😁
How do you know that? The door is closed…… unless you bribed a street urchin/chimney sweep lad to sit inside? 🤪😋

Not sure why you’re leaving the door open to light the oven? Does the oven light ok with the door closed to start with ? Are you lighting it with a spill ?

Everyone I’ve spoken to who repairs them says that’s what you should do for a minute or 2, leave the door open to start with.

You can only light our oven when the door is about 90% open, shutting it too soon turns off the flame, fully open it will not light. I assume that it operates a bit like the hob burners, you have to hold the button in until the thermocouple is hot enough. That 90% opening operating a cam or something to open the valve to light it.

Yes it’s a similar device as a thermocouple but called a flame supervision device, it’s critical therefore that the sensor is enveloped by the main burner and is also clean ! No cooking debris , grease etc on the sensor. (y)

I wanted to check so I put my phone inside, set to video. It proved the light does go out.
