Getting there!
I have a Thetford N175 (auto select) and was wondering how I should use it when travelling.

At the moment I manually put it on gas the morning before we leave (or night before if leaving early) to get it cold and ready for food. I have then left it on gas when travelling.

Should I just be leaving it on auto so when the vehicle is running it selects 12v?

Should I turn the gas off so it can only run 12v (never stop for long if at all)

The thing about travelling with a Thetford fridge on auto with the gas on is as soon as the engine is switched off it switches to gas, this is ok normally but if you are in a filing station with mixed pumps there is a chance that it could ignite petrol fumes from a adjacent pump, could this be the cause of the recent Fontwell fire?
I now switch my my gas off for this reason.

I don't use mine on auto for the above reason, never have.

Hi the fridge is designed to run on 12v when engine is running and stays on 12v for about 10 mins once the engine stops giving time for you to fill up.
Auto select fridges will always search for 240 v / gas / then 12 v if available in that order. Once the engine starts then 12v will automatically select

Hi terry
sorry for being pedantic but you have that slightly wrong
Auto select fridges will search for 240v then 12v and finally gas.

As others have said, on auto, it will stay on 12v from the battery for about 10 minutes after you switch off the ignition, usually plenty of time to refuel. This is no problem if its fed from your leisure batteries. Mine will also stay on 12v if there is sufficient solar input. I normally travel with gas bottles isolated as an extra safety precaution even though I do have the crash shut off system. If I'm leaving the unit for a period longer than ten minutes and there is no sun I switch the selector to off just to prevent it trying to start on gas and failing. Fridge/freezer will be fine for a lunch stop or whatever. Gas goes back on as a backup once we are on site.
