I’m a newbie
Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good alternative to thetford blue toilet cleaner or where I can get it for reasonable price please?
Thanks Nick

Bio washing liquid, choose the aroma that suits you rather than formaldehyde and poo. And install a SOG or equivalent, vented through the roof

Agree but it's usually simplest to vent through the floor.

I prefer to vent up and out, so the smell doesn't hang around. Nothing nicer than having your alfresco breakfast interrupted by the smell of your neighbour take their morning poo

Toilet Blue on ebay. You use very little per dose and it doesn’t contain formaldehyde. Pleasant smell and pretty effective.

Ingwe - I'm interested how well this product works when it's hot as it looks like a fragrance and not a biocide. How has your experience been Also, do you also have a SOG system? Ngiyabonga!

Do you puncture those bio capsules or do they disintegrate in the water?

We don’t have a SOG unit. I’d quite like to have one but they attract a lot of criticism too. We’ve used Toilet Blue now for 2 years and found it much more effective than the Thetford product. It’s much easier to handle, you get the correct dose just by gently squeezing the bottle until the dose is full. Then you can pour it into the cassette. It doesn’t stain like the other stuff either.
As for smells, it copes pretty well, even in hot weather.
Although it doesn’t have formaldehyde, I don’t know what chemicals it does use. There are many who advocate just using water and emptying the cassette daily. That, to me, is a counsel of perfection. We don’t always have access to a black water drain every day and we find that having something that really manages the possible odour important.
We’ve tried bio tabs, fabric conditioner, and brewer’s yeast tablets but none of them really delivered like the True Blue.
I don’t think that any of the toilet chemicals can possibly break down the contents in the time allowed and a lot of them will destroy septic tanks.

Yep, converted mine to roof vent, only downside is wind in the wrong direction & rooflight open you get your own back.

I've just installed a SOG so will feedback after our upcoming long tour. I suspect issues with bad odours from the SOG system will be as a result of not replacing the activated charcoal filter often enough.

Have you tried the green eco version?

This is what we use.

I haven’t used the blue. We went from Thet blue, Thet green then the 40 shot green. Wanted to avoid stuff that was blue colour, as some sites say “no blue”. But it works ok for us. In real heat we sometimes double dose.

Have tried loads of different toilet chemical.
Found that the ones that hide “toilet smells” stink themselves. Traditional blue makes SHMBO wretch.
Now using Elsan green. Absolutely fantastic. Does what it needs to do, no smell whatsoever, chemical or otherwise. It’s not cheap but it is good.

Not quite the quote from ‘Apocalypse Now’………! ;)

I was under the impression that toilet chemicals helped break down the waste, but I see Elsan Green, which we used, is marketed as a toilet deoderant. I forget how much I paid last time, £11 for a bottle perhaps. Is that really all the stuff does, provide a nice (or less bad) smell?

busbuddy Do you have a link for the manufacturer please.
