We’re sailing to hook, driving to Travemünde (Germany) then two days later sailing from there to Helsinki (30 hr ferry) then up to Nordkapp before end Sept, then coming back down through Norway, all the time keeping an eye on the weather (but hoping for snow at RoveniemiThat’s interesting thanks we’ll definitely try it.
We did think about working our way through Sweden and then Finland but concluded although it is essentially a driving holiday we probably don’t have enough time. So Denmark another time and Finland, Estonia etc another time.
Did you ring first or just turn up at the port?I'm booked for Harwich first week of May. 3rd year running!!..I love Norway, it's a very special country in my view.
Parking at harbour overnight is fine. Seems most issues have been covered by others but feel free to PM me if you have any other queries.
I hope you enjoy your trip as much as I have in the last 2 years![]()
Sounds a good plan to me. We thought about the Travemunde ferry to Sweden. It looks good. We won’t book until a day or two before so might still go that way. We’re sailing to hook, driving to Travemünde (Germany) then two days later sailing from there to Helsinki (30 hr ferry) then up to Nordkapp before end Sept, then coming back down through Norway, all the time keeping an eye on the weather (but hoping for snow at Roveniemi) that’s the plan anyhow

Hi and thanks for your replyHi
We went last year and used AutoPASS Ferge for the ferries attached to a Skittlepass for the tolls it was all seamless.
Enjoy the trip, always something amazing around every corner
I just turned up. All trips have been in May and I've never had a problem.Did you ring first or just turn up at the port?
Have you encountered any problems with snow? To be fair we will probably not get towards the Arctic Circle until the beginning of June.I just turned up. All trips have been in May and I've never had a problem.

YR 1 was heavy snow on 55 from Lom going SE but the road itself was clear. Also YR1 the pass into Geiranger village from the south was not open but Yr2, at same time of year, it was. The furthest North I've been, so far, is Alesund.Have you encountered any problems with snow? To be fair we will probably not get towards the Arctic Circle until the beginning of June.
Our trip was July, August and September. No snow anywhere. All roads good and clear. We went as far north as Tromsø.Have you encountered any problems with snow? To be fair we will probably not get towards the Arctic Circle until the beginning of June.
Good reminder that I need to buy a map thanks.Wanders from Glos. It may be of interest to know.....I have used Marco Polo 1: 90000 maps which have been good. I also mark my journey on them including overnight and lunch stops....all a handy record/ reminder![]()
Yes we aren’t completely decided yet.We used this route and just booked the ferry that morning, ferry was one of the best we’ve ever been on.
Thanks I’ll look into this. The Hirtshals to Kristiansand ferry has been mentioned many times and we used that going.
Coming back we used the Gothenburg to Frederikshavn ferry, which we found very convenient, and there is a good aire at Frederikshavn close to the terminal if you have a late crossing.

These have inspired me for Norway, they’ve produced some good videos, although I won’t be doing the hiking they do but definitely the places they go….
You know how these things go. We might decide three days in to do something completely different.Like others, I'll be following this with interest.
As they say, we all want what we don't have; we love the Scandinavian countries
Let's see how this plan unfolds!
Great photos and useful comments thanks.A couple of thoughts from me:
MH trip summer and it snowed on the higher routes in Norway
Motorbike trip in summer and it was over 24’c north of the Arctic circle
Some of the roads are “interesting” for a large MH, or the alternative is long tunnels without the scenery (except roundabouts!)
South Sweden is relatively flat so not much in the way of views apart from trees, rocks and lakes.
Vadstena and Vattern lake was beautiful
Stockholm is lovely.
West coast Norway with impressive bridges and ferries is as beautiful as you imagine.
Alcohol and some food expensive, no one checked the van.
Scandinavia is mainly about the outdoors - so if the weather is unkind it can be limited.
In general - loved it.View attachment 1186734View attachment 1186739View attachment 1186740View attachment 1186741
We started to watch and got a bit bored I seem to recall. If I have the right one I think he was on his own and seemed to get a bit lonely which is understandable. I’ll have another look. Not sure if you enjoy YouTube but Chris Sloanes did an excellent series of vlogs from his trip. I also purchased his book:

Yes that was our thinking. Hopefully it will have warmed up a bit but not be too busy.I've got a few threads on here about our Norwegian trips. I think you're going at about the right time of year because a bit later on in the year it gets busier. I think, like everywhere it's got busier anyway, but it's still a great place to go.
On our first trip we drove up through Sweden and meandered back down through Norway.
We stayed there and also loved Trondheim.I can recommend visiting Trondheim if you get that way. It’s a beautiful old city. The council operates two Motorhome parking areas for overnight stays. We stayed at Dora (next to huge concrete German U boat pens) when we were there in 2019 and walked into the old part of Trondheim. The other parking area is in the newer commercial area some distance from the old city.
