I've just come back from a two month continental journey in which I discovered that my UK/Union Flag number plate stickers were still on the kitchen table waiting for me at home! So I was GB all the way.

In France I spotted a lorry also sporting his GB number plate. So while I was sitting in the queue at Calais for UK Border Control I gazed aimlessly around at all the British registered cars and was amused by the variety of solutions that the drivers had come up with, including:
  • Doing nothing. Number plate still showed GB.
  • Number plate still showing GB but a UK sticker was slapped somewhere on the back.
  • Number plate without a country ID and with a UK sticker slapped somewhere on the back. Goody goody!
  • Number plate changed to one sporting a UK identifier. Very goody goody!
  • Number plate changed to one sporting a UK identifier AND a UK sticker slapped on the back. Silly boy.
  • Number plate kept but a UK sticker covering up the GB part
  • A hand written UK on a small sticker squeezed on the end of the number plate. Loved it!
And you?

Never had any UK or GB stickers on my vehicles and been all over Europe without any problems.
Just another UK thing that some ministerial twat has thought of. 🤬🤬

I put uk stickers over the eu numberplate ones, also silly girl? Covered the big GB sticker with a UK one as i couldn't get it off.

thought I had sent for 4 got a pack of 10 so if anyone sees us about and is in need 😉

We were goody goodies and put a UK sticker on but still sporting our EU stars on the number plate. What was the point changing to UK again?

Just get them changed and it will be all change again.

Bought a single big UK sticker for the back and swapped it last September while we were in Benidorm. Can't remember what's on the number plates 🤔 either GB or EU. Don't think that matters now.

Some EU countries require an oval UK sticker regardless of what is on your number plate.

Remember the days when the only yellow headlights in France were the French and the English? I must admit I’ve changed my no. Plate to UK, but only because I don’t trust French plod now we’re no longer in EU

My number plates have uk and the 🇬🇧. I also have GB and UK stickers on the back.

Do you really think French plod give a monkeys whether we're in the EU or not and presumably British plod are anti French because we aren't?. Sounds a bit paranoid to me

I got the little blue UK stickers to add to the LHS of each number plate. Been on over a year and still look like new. Also got an oval UK sticker. It's undersized and not black and white, but a silver / grey colour which matches the Autotrail graphics.

I don't but I don't see the need to break the law, particularly for such a low cost item.
Does anyone know what the legislation is in, say France, that requires a UK registered vehicle to display a UK sticker and what the penalty for infringement is? Presumably each country would have to have its own legislation.

I may be misunderstanding you but it is quite legal to have a number plate with GB on it providing you have a UK sticker on the rear of the vehicle. That's what we have.

Our camper has F plates, (not swearing, we live here!):giggle:
We see loads of British variations, especialy just recently during what has been the holiday period, some with no markings at all, some still with GB plates and no other stickers, but most seem to have the UK sticker correctly. I'm not at all sure that anyone really cares, and anyway it's fairly obvious from the style of reg. plate and the fact that the vehicle is RHD that it's probably British. The main complaint I hear is that British cars drive over the speed limit; it's still 80kph on many main roads outside urban areas.

The Gendarmerie come in for a lot of stick from people who know little about France (or are just anti-French - makes me wonder why they would want to come here for holiday) but anyway, I've always found them (the Gendarmes) very polite. It's not unusual here to get stopped for routine breath and documents checks especially just after lunch and after 11pm at night (could be more of this in UK, perhaps more uninsured drivers would be caught). I think the number plate thing would only be penalised in the event of a more serious contravention or a serious accident; just my opinion. As far as I'm concerned the change from GB to UK was a total waste of time; is it saying that Britain is no longer "Great", but is more "United" ?? It wasn't an EU directive. The old system worked and this just adds (albeit a small cost) to the general cost of living when everyone is trying to tighten belts.

Because, technically, GB does not include Northern Ireland. This country is Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Been loads of threads on this for many weeks/months. No border staff seem to bother and no-one has reported being challenged.

I know that but wasn't NI part of the UK for donkeys years before the change so why change now. It's acheived nothing apart from increased sales of stickers as far as I can tell and a change to the passeport colour in your photo ( made in France!) acheived a similar amount

so does anyone know anyones friends brothers Mother in law whose ever got into trouble for it.........

Same question for anyone pulled with a toad? 😉😎😂😂😂
