Temporary insurance for import

Hi there,

If all goes to plan I should be importing a new motorhome from Germany to UK in October. Getting help from an import agency.

However I will need to get temporary insurance on a chassis number until vehicle is UK registered.

Has anyone else done this or know of an insurer who might offer it?

Managed to get 3rd party on mine to enable drive back from Bavaria once on UK soil it was fully comp.
That was with NFU Chichester branch, very helpful lady there called Clare.

The third party insurance normally comes with the German export plates. This is up to the dealer in Germany to sort it out for you. On top of that if you’re paying an import agency it not something you ought to do yourself.

Drawing a blank here unfortunately. Still waiting to speak to NFU but all the others mentioned won't insure until UK registered. And given that could be weeks with current DVLA delays is kind of a problem. I'm not sure what magically changes when a vehicle is registered but given it will be off-road anyway until then I'm rather disappointed with the response from the "specialists".

Here is an update on this and also the export process from Germany for those interested!

NFU agreed to provide fire and theft cover once I got the vehicle home, which was great and not very expensive at all. This covers until the UK registration and import is complete and then will convert to a normal policy. Well done NFU for being about the only organisation to offer this.

I have just returned home with my new MH from Germany. The dealer (Palmowski in Bielefeld) were amazing and so helpful. They took me to the local place that provides insurance and number plates. 30 day of third-party insurance was about 100 euros. Then we went to the local vehicle registration office which was a bit more complicated. Firstly because of covid, they didn't want to let me and my translator in. But luckily they relented on that. The biggest problem was the lack of an approved proof of UK residency. Despite me having bank statements, council tax, passport, driving license etc, they were obsessed with my having a signed and stamped letter from the local mayor / town hall. I tried to explain that we didn't have that. Initially they said no, they wouldn't process my application. So I sat in reception and emailed them every single official thing I could get my hands on (payslips, national insurance letter you can get from HRMC portal etc) and eventually they relented thank goodness. Process was then pretty slick. They took all my paperwork for the MH, needed a bank account with an IBAN (thanks Revolut!!) and gave me my certificate back. We then went back to the number plate place where they handprint nice metal export plates. Back again to the registration office to get a sticker on them and then I was fully road legal for 30 days in Europe and UK. The 5 day plates they normally provide for Germans to get their vans home (as you have to register your vehicle in your local home town) are not valid in many European countries.

If I was doing this again, I would get a notary to provide a signed and stamped letter (Germany like stamps!) confirming my address and UK tax residency.

No problems driving the MH back with Euro Tunnel. This is my first MH so drive took about 10 hours instead of 7 as I don't think I went much above 60mph!

Now for the import side of things which is going to be interesting!!!

I used to buy jap cars direct from the importers auction and used Adrian Flux to insure them from the chassis No. I think there are multiple insurers who can do this now.

Tried them first but until UK registered, they didn't want to know about it.

We imported ours in 2018 and the dealers Durrwang Mörlein arranged the export plates for us so didn’t have the hassle you had, don’t worry about the import side that’s not to bad ours was completed in two weeks although others will tell you it’s taken them a lot longer, just make sure you supply all the details required and treble check them before sending off
